Places to go

I just reminded a Navy Reserve Retired friend of all the wonderful places a military member with a CAC or retiree card can go in the DoD recreation facility system. That also includes cadets and midshipmen. Rates are often pegged to pay grade.

Beach cabins in Hawai’i and cabins in Volcano National Park on the Big Island. Recreational sailing and boating facilities on bases. Campgrounds. Disney military resort.

These are all over the world, some big, some hidden gems. Military bases also have regular lodging such as Navy Lodges, or business hotel chain locations.

Some highlights (and a truly tiny sample):

There is also a non-military company called Armed Forces Vacation Club, which has been around for years.

As an Ensign, I got the bit between my teeth for travel, stationed in Spain and Italy for almost 6 years straight. I didn’t go home except once. My intrepid parents came to see me, trips they never would have taken on their own. I did all the logistics, driving, booking trains, setting up tours, talking, doing non-tourist stuff. They had a blast. As the active duty military member, I could book them as my guests. The USO ran great bus tours out of Naples.

Parents reading this, just saying…you taught your cadet or midshipman to fly, let them soar and be open to adventures with them. I booked us a private boat ride on Lake Como on a postcard type of day, and I had never seen my dad so relaxed and happy as we puttered by villas, looked at the mountains and endless blue sky, and stopped for gelato.

For future cadets and midshipmen, you will have astonishing opportunities to see the world and expand your horizons, and just plain have fun.

If your cadet is a skiier or snowboarder, they can purchase the military epic pass. The epic pass allows them to access any of the Vail Corporation ski resorts which are all over the US. My cadet purchased his back in September for $150 and it's good for the whole season. He's used it at Keystone and Vail already this season. Last year we went to Park City for spring break and this year we are going to Lake Tahoe. The epic pass is less than the cost of one days lift ticket and does not have blackout dates. There is a place fairly close to CGA that you can also use the epic pass.

Winter break was always home for me. Spring breaks included Iceland, Portugal/Canary Islands, and skiing in Colorado. Skiing in Colorado was the year that COVID started and they told us to stay for another week while they figured out how to teach online, so I extended my car rental, dropped my friends off at the Denver airport, and drove out and met a high school friend and spent that week camping in the desert and climbing in Moab.
