Plan "A"s Stress

I hope each and everyone of you experiences "Plan A" stress.

Don't give up hope just yet.

It is true my DS has two awesome choices but he also was denied by four other SAs/ROTC programs.

Just like the lottery, you have to apply to win.

We've always called this "a crisis of abundance" in our home. My DD is a 2c now. Three years ago just about this time of year she was really struggling to decide between USNA and Yale, UW, USC and Duke. In her case about 95% of the people around her were pushing Yale. She walked into my office one evening and said she was going to pull the lever for USNA. I asked why (mostly to cover my own ass ----"honey I couldn't stop her!"). My DD replied:

"Because all the kids I met on all my recruiting trips were pretty much the same--- except for NAVY. I wanted to know more about every Mid I met there. I want to be a part of that group of people, and something bigger than myself".

I didn't start out a huge advocate of SA's (we are not a military family); I am one now. It's the opportunities USNA provided my DD to test herself and learn life lessons outside the class room, that's the part that has been jaw-dropping for me. I think it boils down to this at is core: The SA's are consumers of their own educational product. Ivy's are great schools and highly selective, but at the end of the day you are buying access to course material and lectures. The school itself has relatively little interest in where you go post graduation. In contrast, NAVY via the USNA is training prospective Flag Rank Officers. That "Consumer Interest" shows up in the broader educational experience they provide.

.......................And then theres that 300K we saved in under-grad expense that DD will have laying around for grad school. Is my bias showing yet???

Princeton is a great school, "The most well rounded of the Ivys" and awesome STEM programs. Your DS can't make a bad choice. Sadly, his acceptance at both suggests that he is the type to struggle mightily to make the "Perfect Choice".

You are right to keep your hands off, (Kudos),--------------- but If I were you this weeks Netflix viewing would include: In Harms Way, Flying Leathernecks,
Sands Of Iwo Jima, Master and Commander, Run Silent Run Deep and Destination Tokyo. Then I'd suggest that the family should watch a movie about Princeton and ask DS to find one for the family to watch.

BTW In my world nobody cares where your undergrad degree is from......with the possible exceptions of USNA, USMA, USAFA, USCGA.

Oh, and you must have been great parents to be facing this kind of a problem----Well Done!
