I am curious as to how one goes about keeping Plan B (or C,D etc ) in play. Our son has an appointment to USNA, and a NROTC to Norwich. Knowing that things can and sometimes (rarely) change, how do we keep NROTC in play until the doors close on I Day? I have no issue paying the non refundable nominal deposit to Norwich, but several sessions for NSI (think I got that right) will have started prior to I Day. Norwich did offer him merit scholarship, so that would kick in if need be. Trying to wrap my brain around it and I am not getting a clear picture as to how to navigate preserving a back up plan. Hopefully, we won't need it.

Congrats. I am pretty sure the NROTC scholarship can be turned down at any time before he starts school. As far as reserving a spot at Norwich, there have been many posts about the ethics of accepting offers from schools, paying a deposit and then withdrawing. The most ethical thing to do IMHO would be to discuss the situation with Norwich. There are some rare horror stories about schools (not Norwich that I recall) who have threatened to enforce the enrollment contract and collect tuition. If your DS suffers an injury (God forbid) that would keep him out of USNA, it would also likely keep him out of NROTC and NSI. If he just changes his mind, and decides not to go to USNA and to attend Norwich instead, I believe there are three sessions of NSI this summer, instead of two, and one of them may be after I Day.

Sounds like NSI would be the only hard part to navigate. Normally I would suggest paying the deposit to Norwich and waiting to see if all pans out as planned. I see I-Day is June 20th this year. Last year I believe the NSI sessions started in July, but there were only two sessions. It sounds like this year there will be three sessions. Perhaps your DS could contact the Norwich unit and request a NSI session that starts after I-Day. Good luck!

Thank you, he has informed Norwich of his appointment and been honest with them regarding USNA being his first choice. We will continue to keep them in the loop. I cannot see him choosing Norwich over USNA, not knocking any who did, he just has wanted USNA for as long as I can remember.
I will keep talking with him, I appreciate the help, and yes NSI is the tricky part I think.

You literally posted the same question I was thinking about earlier. My kid is in similar situation as your DS

I thought about you guys the other day. Navigation would have been a course I should have taken. Steering through this is not easy!
It is, however, a good problem to have.

It’s also a new problem. NSI dates as I understand are assigned. And at least one is before iday. What happens if a kid receives an appointment while they are AT USNA? I know it wont be common but sure could happen! Interesting.
