Plan B

Should we accept Plan B in case of injury??
There are differing opinions on this, but we are keeping our plan B in case of illness or injury. We paid the deposit last fall so the only change made was to move his New Student Conference to the end of the summer. It was so much work to make all of this happen that I'm not willing to take a chance and my DS earned his opportunities. I would hate for him to break a bone or something and end up home at community college.

Our DS' plan B deadline was right after BCT which gave him time. As soon as BCT ended he emailed the school letting them know he was declining the scholarship.

We have until 05/15 to notify my DS' plan B school and pay the non-refundable deposit. This, paired with the fact that his NROTC scholarship is automatically rescended the moment he reports to BCT, has led us to this assessment - he will wait until the 05/15 deadline to decline (this will get him through most of the lacrosse season) and then I'll use the deposit money to start a Roth IRA for him.

We'll only know the "right" answer after the fact...

In case of injury/illness, would you forfeit your AFROTC money?

That is a DoDMERB and HQAFROTC decision regarding if it would be DQ or a remedial. However, let's say you break your arm June 1st. You won't be out of the cast until July 15th. No PT needed. Your plan B school starts Sept 1st. Meanwhile you notify HQ AFROTC June 1st of the break. Go through the paperwork and by the time you get to school the waiver is through and the scholarship is still there.

In my years here, I would say that 90% of the kids that keep their scholarship AND somehow medically don't make it to or through IDay have been able to use their scholarship because by the time school started their medical issue was resolved. Remember you will have a final physical on I Day before the oath and there have been kids that have been sent back. One posters DS here actually twisted their knee getting off the bus on I Day and was sent back home that day. They had plan B in place and was able to activate the scholarship.

I called plan B and spoke with them. They are very happy to be back up plan for an academy. Said that they don't feel like an academy is direct competition. Felt like he deserved to have a chance for his hard earned scholarship and hope he doesn't need to use it. But they are there for him if he does. Thanked me for being honest about his situation and wished him well.
That was a great relief!

We did the same last year. And had the same experience. "Plan B" was fine to let them know by August mid about our decision

I spoke with my ALO earlier this evening. He said that if I was to get injured before I day, I would be issued a medical deferment, where I would be admitted the following fall, following a complete healing. This would mean that a plan B school isn't really necessary. This info definitely set me at ease a bit, so I figured I'd share. I hope this helps someone!

Yes, but the question is what will you do for that entire year you are waiting? Are you just going to sit at home? You can go to a CC, but would you be happier at your plan B school doing AFROTC?

I would definitely clarify your understanding of what the ALO said. I have understood that once you report for I-Day and swear in then yes, you would get a medical deferment if injured. However, if any injury happens before then USAFA is not obligated to offer anything for the next year. Maybe another ALO can confirm one way or the other.

I discussed both situations with my ALO yesterday, and he said that unless it was something permanently disqualifying, I would receive a medical deferment.
