Enlisted to Officer
Hey guys, I been interested in becoming a pilot for the US Marines but there are many paths to take. Personally I want to go enlisted reserves, and then apply for PLC. The reasoning behind this is because of where I'm at. I'm overweight (5"4, 175lbs) and currently training to get in better shape and also not a strong person mentally. I believe after Bootcamp, I should be mentally and physically hardened for PLC. Another reason is the benefits. Don't get me wrong, I'm not joining because of benefits. My goal is to be independent without my parent's help. What are your guy's thoughts?

What is the best way to become an Officer?
So until now, I've only known two ways of becoming an officer. Going through PLC or OCS. But now, another way is NROTC. So which is the best?

If got any terms or things wrong, pls correct me on it.

Thx

Hi Kim Jong Un, if that’s your real name.

Do you currently have college credits or do you plan on starting college whilst in the Marine Corps Reserve?

There’s nothing wrong with joining the military for the benefits, but I wouldn’t show up to Parris Island or MCRD San Diego with the primary goal of becoming “mentally and physically hardened for PLC.” I’ve read before and coincidentally read again last night that Marine boot camp is more mentally challenging and Marine OCS is more physically challenging. This opinion comes from Marines who have completed both.

Anyway, I’m but a mere non-combatant and surely someone here will come along with their valuable insight and advice.

Nothing wrong about joining for benefits. A lot of veterans have joined for a steady paycheck, to learn a trade, to get health care, affordable college, GI Bill, etc. Lord Wellington said of the British Army's enlisted ranks, which built & defended an Empire, "Scum of the earth, enlisted for drink." He was right but he also loved those scum who took the King's shilling & died for the Crown in a thousand battles in a hundred countries all around the globe.

What is a problem is your honest admission of not being mentally strong. You might get by in many occupations in life while being not mentally strong, but serving in the Marine Corps sure ain't one of them. You've got to overcome this one on your own, before going to Parris Island or San Diego. Motivate yourself!

If you want to be a Marine Corps officer the best routes are either NROTC or PLC. But you've got to be a college student first. NROTC & PLC are the source of most Marine Corps officers. OCS is mostly for college grads & fills in the numbers that the Naval Academy, NROTC & PLC collectively don't meet.

Gaining a commission through the enlisted ranks is possible, but very hard. Odds are against it.

If you want to serve as an enlisted Marine the course is easy: get in shape; run, run & run some more. Lose weight, eat right, etc. Pull-ups are hard, but the Marines love 'me. Visit your Marine Corps recruiter with pen in-hand & ready to sign a contract.
