PLEASE RESPOND AS LOAs COME IN

Just got the mail... no letter yet.

One thing: I have my FFR interview on Wednesday. Would they wait for that to be sent in before an LOA could be sent out even though I already did a squad leader interview at SLS?

interview is not required for an LOA. My RC perfers an interview done by FFR than a SLS squad leader. No offense to SLS squad leaders but they are only several years ahead of applicants in life experiece plus being a cadet.

You were not accepted to SLS but you got an LOA?
Can someone explain how that might work?

SLS is based on almost entirely on geographic region, not necessarily on one's "stats" (stats play a role within the specific regions determining who will go). LOAs can be issued for a much broader spectrum of reasons than just physical residence.

While mailbox stalking for LOA's is an annual event, it's worth reminding would be candidates that now is the time to get your nom applications rolling. Most require letters of recommendation, transcripts, etc and there is not a handy portal to check status.

If your application is not available online, call the office and get them to email it to you. Have the discussion about what LOR's you'll need, etc.

Line up that transcript, or better yet, get sealed copies from your school to submit so you will know when it happened. Confirm they have your SAT scores in hand. Send them again if they do not.

Lot's to be doing while waiting for the elusive LOA. Whether you get one or not, things start moving very quickly once the nom apps open!

It's on the way!

My son got an email from his nomination coordinator that his LOA is on the way! It wasn't in today's mail though...

I'll re-ask my question so it doesn't get buried in the thread:

Has anyone actually received a physical Letter in the mail yet? I would think that if they were mailed Sep. 1st they would be out by now

See my earlier post. The letters probably didn't leave West Point until Tuesday.

Good end note. May I ask how you (and others) found out whether or not you'd be getting an LoA?

My RC send list of LOAs to his state coordinators. For my state, only 3.

Also, any MALO/FFR with access to the admissions database can search for LOAs within his or her area. My case, I have access to the whole state.

This varies by region. Our RC told us that without at least a phone interview, he would NOT submit names for an LOA. Think the point was to put the burden on the FFR's, but he was requiring confirmation that the candidate had at least been talked to.

I received email versions for my candidates last Friday - actual copies of the letters that were mailed out. They are dated 8/31 and per the RC's secretary as of Friday they had been mailed out. Again, this may just be for our region.

I'm so sorry to hear this - I was really pulling for you! I do have confidence that with your stats and your determination that you'll make it once the appointments come out in March (or sooner if they have a second run of LOA's!). Good luck and hang tough!

Same here - I was surprised by the limited LOA's. We had 12 names submitted for LOA's that I can tell (for my state) from the last email update. I can also look at the whole state and see that only 5 of those got approved - just a bit discouraging since those 12 were pretty hand-selected to be the "best of the best" already.

Everyone else - hang in there as well! This year is unlike any in the past few years as far as the limited number of LOA's. Two years ago I would have told people that you really wanted/needed to get an LOA to have a good shot at the class since they gave out around 500. From what we're hearing this year it'll be more like 200 which just means a lot more people won't find out if they get an appointment until March instead of now. Makes senior year a bit less relaxing but the bottom line is that appointment, no matter when! So do all you can to improve between now and then and keep updating and making your file as strong as possible! :thumb:

marciemi, do you know how LOAs work for minorities?

@Bill - no, we have nothing to do with minority candidates other than referring them to the proper people. Even the RC had them flagged on the LOA "submitted" list so that we knew he had no control over their files. I would assume that you're working with a difference RC if you are one and that would be who you would have to talk to.

Oh, so you do have access to the minority LOAs?

As MemberLG said, I can see any files from my state and see if they got LOA's so far. But I have no idea on timeline or if theirs is different. On the list of all candidates the RC sent up that he sent all the FFR's it did have them identified just like it had candidates identified who'd received Presidential Noms or needed interviews or anything like that. But again, that was just for my region.

I completed my application about two weeks ago, including the nomination (got the presidential). Does this mean I am not eligible for an LOA? Also, how soon should I expect to receive an admissions decision?

Minority outreach

I also am apart of the minority group. The admissions officer called me a few weeks ago to tell me I have a good shot of getting an LOA, and I was contacted by the minority outreach leader about an all expense paid visit to the academy. I have not yet received an LOA(I live in CA so it could take awhile), but I think my chances are pretty good. I haven't had an interview at all, but I guess things really are different for the minority program? Anywho, I'm just going to keep checking the mail and hope for the LOA

the initial batch of LOAs, about 200, went out already. My RC told me there will be some for LOAs but not many. I believe regular appointments will start going out in sometime in October, so if your application is complete you are more likely to get an appointment than LOA.

My perspective, this fixation on LOA is very unhealthy. There are several factors to getting an LOA, and the only part an applicant control is how complete your application is. So why focus on something that's really beyond your control?
