My parents are not able to come for the first day of PPW (Thursday, August 8th). They will be able to come Friday through Sunday, August 9-11. Will they be missing out on a lot?

Not really- they will not be able to visit with you until you are released at noon Friday. Parents tend to arrive Thursday so that they can shop the Midstore and get their card and DOD ids done before meeting up with plebes because most Plebes want out of Dodge asap.

Thursday is when parents tour the Yard and see the academic and extra curricular displays in Dahlgren Hall. We didn’t get there until Friday AM in time for the Superintendent’s Welcome.

As others have stated, they won't miss much on Thursday. Do tell them to get there early enough for the welcome at Alumni on Friday. That is when they will show your Plebe Summer video for them. Your folks will love it.

I haven’t read much about this ... how long does my son have ... leaves Friday and reports back when?

Pretty sure it's still Sunday at 10pm. Start getting into DTA before 8:30 or 9 though. It's a madhouse. We dropped ours off in front of Gate 1 and kept driving.

Reading your question literally - he has to report back in every night, (Friday and Saturday) no overnight stays, unless something drastic changes this year. There were some recent threads, as well as PPW threads going back years, with descriptions of the typical schedule. The search function should bring those up.

Keep an eye on link below for the schedule.

Thanks! I saw the threads before the appointment so I didn’t pay attention.

That stinks ... I was thinking a weekend in DC.

Have a plan A and a plan B. And then do what your plebe wants. They will have just (almost) competed a grueling plebe summer. Without phone. Physically mentally and emotionally drained. Some will sleep mostly. Some will want to chill out in A/C and reconnect socially with their friends. Some will want to game. Did I mention some will want to sleep? And some may want to explore DC. They have a radius they can adventure out to. DC included. There would be enough time on the long day for maybe a quick trip. But plebes may not feel comfortable venturing out for a day trip...they will be paranoid about returning on time. And being dropped off with 1,200 of their classmates creates a lot of traffic tie ups. PPW is fantastic!

Maybe they mean DBIDS? Required for driving on the yard. Although now it’s also required even for pedestrian gate entry if your state doesn’t issue Real Id drivers license.

We didn’t do the DBIDS as we didn’t anticipate needing to drove on the yard. And the wait was long. However, if we were to do it over, we would have gotten it issued PPW or Iday. Turns out we rent a car when we go and driving on the yard would be very helpful!

You can still go and play in DC or Baltimore - but, if you read all the threads on this, let your plebe set the tone. He may want to hunker down in reg PT gear with his social media in nice AC, take long naps and long showers, eat his favorite take-out brought in so he doesn’t have to put on his white uniform. He may just want to go see a movie, eat a nice meal out, and chill inside the rest of the time. He will be antsy about his time to return each night - he and 1100 or so classmates and their family entourages will all be heading for the same narrow streets, roundabouts and gates at the same time. He doesn’t know yet how PS will affect him and what will feel best to him. Be open and flexible.

Save local area jaunts until he has actual weekend overnight liberty off the Yard. Or, if he’s the type who re-charges by doing this stuff, go for it on PPW.

Big pro tip: on 3-day weekends, plebes get liberty off-Yard on both Sat and Sun, with on-Yard liberty on Monday. If they take a weekend on one of those, that’s another night off the Yard. Your plebe will learn all about how and when and if he is entitled to overnight liberty and will be responsible for explaining it all to you. He will also be assigned to rotational duty sections, and there will be weekends he may not have liberty. There will also be times when he feels he simply has too much to do - being flexible is the key to mid parenting! They do get more liberty each year.

Liberty and leave (Thanksgiving, Winter, spring break, summer, inter-sessional) are different. Another thing he will learn.

Friday they are released at noon formation and they have to report back at 10pm, Saturday -they are released after the formal parade- I think 10 am ? and do not have to report back until 11:59pm, Sunday I believe it is 8am till 6pm

Can you give an idea as to how much advance notice they get for the overnight liberty weekends?

Sometimes it’s not much notice (Supe granted it spur of the moment after the volleyball team beat army, another for meritorious reward for grades). Other times is a reward that can be banked and used on a planned weekend. Like this last three day weekend. Lots of advance notice so plane tickets can be purchased (although it be yanked too, I would think)

DS is a Plebe and I feel like the leave earned and granted has been more than I had expected! DS may not say the same!

Agreed, my plebe had some banked overnight he was going to use for this last 3day holiday since we were coming up to visit and his company was awarded something for merit so not only did he not have to use his banked leave he was released at 8 am instead of noon

The mere thought of Plebes getting weekends at all is enough to make us old grads shake our heads. I suppose that Plebes are allowed to "drag" (date) now too ?

As a father of a new Plebe this summer, I too question this stuff.

Merit?!?

My son deserves a participation trophy! :p
