Plebe Parents Weekend 2019

As a father of a new Plebe this summer, I too question this stuff.

Merit?!?

My son deserves a participation trophy! :p

Well it could all be a moot point as a new superintendent begins her appointment with your class! So who knows what’s in store going forward.

the only Drags my plebe has had are during CVW - no dating within company whatsoever-

Plebes end up dating much more in the spring time. As the weather gets better, relationships tend to pop up. In company dating is against rules, but it’s a balance. It happens all the time. Capt MJ probably approved a lot of those requests in her time. Once a relationship gets serious then discussions about ‘love chitting’ will occur. Week one of a relationship no one expects someone to move companies. Also, if Plebes, they always could be shot gunned or something that would naturally split them into different companies.

OldNavyBGO, who could forget the 22 mile radius limit either? Use to not be able to go into Baltimore or DC as a plebe, unless on a weekend. I think that constraint has been lifted, though.

Then again we had a weekend on our PPW, but that was because the yard’s watermain broke.

22 ? I thought it was 7, but my memory is failing. I do remember changing out of uniform in a gas station bathroom somewhere around 7 miles away. (Sorry, the statute of limitations on any transgression I had as a Midshipman is long past !)

"HER"? Does that mean that General Reynolds was named as the next Supe? If that's so, there's going to be a lot of Ooh-Rahing around my house.

Can you give an idea as to how much advance notice they get for the overnight liberty weekends?
The mere thought of Plebes getting weekends at all is enough to make us old grads shake our heads. I suppose that Plebes are allowed to "drag" (date) now too ?
Yeah - thanks for saying that before I had to. From when I arrived for I day, my first night away from Bancroft Hall was Christmas Leave

up to 7 miles was Town Libs and up to 22 for "Area Libs"

And then there is “hate chitting,” a concept I could occasionally use in the corporate world. I didn’t approve those except as a last resort. I may come back and explain that one, or maybe a current or recent mid will rescue me!

No not named that I’m aware of. But it could be her! Regardless, there will be a change of command. So things could be very different is my point.

Should I put my son’s suggestion for real eggs for breakfast to the new or old Superintendent?

Steam tray powdered eggs are part of the training for extended underway periods at sea, as is long-life milk.
That’s why hot sauce and Hershey’s syrup were invented.

LOL

I asked my son recently about the food and he said it was ok. But the eggs were the fake ones hotels use so he didn’t care for breakfast.

Long life milk?!? WTH?!?

He does like Hershey syrup though! I prefer Quik.

Here you go:

Think of the fresh milk that could be drunk on a daily basis on any Navy ship. Think of the reefer space that would take, and the expiration date, which may or may not coincide with scheduled port calls. Some countries’ milk does not meet Federal standards. Long-life milk tastes much better than powdered milk, but there is something about the taste...
Of course, USNA has fresh milk! Ships and subs do take on fresh milk and produce, but it may not last to the next logistics stop.

Sometimes it’s not much notice (Supe granted it spur of the moment after the volleyball team beat army, another for meritorious reward for grades). Other times is a reward that can be banked and used on a planned weekend. Like this last three day weekend. Lots of advance notice so plane tickets can be purchased (although it be yanked too, I would think)

DS is a Plebe and I feel like the leave earned and granted has been more than I had expected! DS may not say the same!
Agreed, my plebe had some banked overnight he was going to use for this last 3day holiday since we were coming up to visit and his company was awarded something for merit so not only did he not have to use his banked leave he was released at 8 am instead of noon
I’m so glad to hear the plebes occasionally get weekend liberty. I didn’t realize that. We have a place at the beach 2 hours away which is great to go to year round and I know my DD will appreciate some visits and downtime.

Thanks! I saw the threads before the appointment so I didn’t pay attention.

That stinks ... I was thinking a weekend in DC.

No. Like others have said your Plebe will report back each night. My advice is to give yourself time to get them safely and timely back on the Yard. The congestion to even get close to the Yard was terrible in 2018. Also the card reader stopped working and a lot of Plebes were getting VERY stressed!

Make sure to have your Shout wipes as they will be in those Summer Whites!

So I believe the weekend liberty granted has a radial distance requirement. 2 hours away would be outside that boundary. If you are talking about having your DD coming to visit at the beach. Leave is a different story. Leave isn’t granted as often as liberty. Leave is generally (at least DS’ plebe year this far) holidays and spring break.

A few quick questions: Is Plebe Summer six or seven weeks long? I've seen references to both on the USNA website. Also, does anyone one know the Plebe Summer graduation date for the Class of 2023? Thanks.

Six weeks to PPW. Seven weeks total. Some think Plebe Summer ends with PPW. It doesn’t, and the detailers make sure the plebes know it.

Ya that last week is a hard one for some plebes. The get that little “break”, spending time with family and/or friends, gf’s. Then they have to go BACK. To a greater unknown: meeting the rest of the brigade.

But it’s also very different. They have their phones. They stay getting issued stuff for the a/c year, books, computers.

Not sure what you mean by "Plebe Summer Graduation" ...There are the following two events at the end of Plebe Summer but there is no graduation to speak of:
  • Turnover Parade: August 16
  • Reform of the Brigade of Midshipmen: August 16
