Hello Everyone
I am on waitlist for now. Few questions regarding PS.

- wake up time?
- sleep time?
- how much running a day? Is it gradual increase in running distance ?
- what’s max per day someone would run?
- what’s min per day someone would run?
- how much personal time during day?
- Are their any Saturday and Sunday when nothing needs to be done and MIDS can do their own stuff like catching on sleep, hygiene etc?

Thanks for help.

Wake up time: 0530 Mon-Sat, 0730 Sun
Bedtime: 2200
Max miles in a Day: 6 miles, you only run 6 once. Most days you will stay less than or equal to 3.15 miles.
Min Miles in a Day: Zero, no running on Wednesday's & Sunday's.
Personal time: Mon-Sat 30 minutes, Sunday 4 hours.

The only time you can catch up on things is Sunday morning. Most people use this time for church, to fold clothes, or writes letters. Most companies do not allow their plebes to sleep during this time.

Parent here - and just out of curiosity - is there a chance to do longer runs if that is something a plebe is into? Or would that fall under the Sunday morning personal time? Any company optional longer runs?

No, there are no opportunities to do longer runs. I would be very surprised if your plebe would even want to in the middle of plebe summer.

The running groups are morning PE are split up based on ability so your plebe will be running with people of similar running ability.

Once plebe summer is over, your plebe can run as much as he/she wants.

OK - good to hear that morning runs are split by ability. I certainly would not have wanted to do any more running during plebe summer, but DS finds 10+ mi runs relaxing, so just thought I would ask. Thanks for answering these questions - it's nice to get info from current mids.

JSYK, plebe summer you basically are owned. All you do is what you are told. When you are told to do it. You loose concept of time/day, etc. by design. Those who have been through it can share more but there is a method/reason for all of this.

Been through it twice from the parent end. There is very, very little time to make your own choices/decisions. It’s actually pretty easy in that sense.

A couple of the letters I got referred to Sunday being available a bit, but they still had tasks to do that ate up that time. They honestly don’t have time to even write much (some parents sent pre-written/addressed envelope options so all they had to do was check a box on the letter and stuff it back In the envelope). Last year was different for some due to Covid isolation. Those kids had the phones/laptops and could communicate back home.

It’s a stark difference from anything you can imagine....

An exception to this would be signing up for cross country during sports period, if it’s offered for this Plebe Summer. Aside from that everyone is gonna be so exhausted, I’m not sure anyone would have a desire to do more running.

I think I like the idea of a form letter. With boxes to check. I might actually get my DS to do that. I do remember that it was possible to write letters from the shower stall (when dry) after lights out, as the light was minimal and blocked. My dad saved my letters that started out, "Hi Family. I am writing this from the shower after lights out....I am still alive, just so you know."

Just FYI - for last Plebe Summer, running groups were not split up by ability (everyone stayed with their company), but that was due to COVID. This summer may look a little different as well - too soon to tell.

DD, who was a detailer last year, said this forced grouping was a disappointment. Kept the strong runners from improving. Kept the weak runners from improving via focused instruction from detailers. It certainly minimized COVID spread, but disappointing nonetheless.

My DS, who I have never thought of as a strong runner, made it into the fastest group two summers ago. It was a huge source of pride for him. I hope they have groups this year.

Agreed! My DS was also disappointed - after the two weeks of ROM where they couldn't run at all (after training for months prior), and then when they COULD run, for most of them, it wasn't at the pace they were used to prior to heading to the Academy. Here's to hoping this summer will be more toward the norm for c/o 2025!

Last years ROM-ing, and iso, and quarantining, did a number overall on many people. Self included. But yes, my plebe headed in, in top shape. Then 3 months of Covid positive “no activity” and then on restricted PT? He lost it all. And gained 20 lbs. He is a track kid, but Covid did a number on his physical fitness. Still not 100 pct, but that’s more driven by the difficulties with time/gym space/trainings, etc.

For a regular plebe summer...

-Those wanting to participate in cross-country and track, there are opportunities to add a few miles, but it generally is not much since plebe summer days generate a lot of fatigue - normally just a couple of "shake out" miles. Additionally, there used to be a plebe summer track meet (think time trials) at least mid-way through the summer.

-Plebes will also have to complete rates and, most likely, extra individual and group assignments - so all of that "personal" time isn't necessarily "free." As explained above, it is sometimes why plebes don't have time to write lengthy letters. To be frank, in a regular plebe summer, there isn't a lot of down time. You will be exhausted at the end of each day and will value the mandatory sleep times. Good news is you will be surrounded by your new friends and have an opportunity to socialize (to some extent) with them.

DS didnt have Covid, but between the ROMs, limited PS, constant snack/junk food grab&go's, etc he has definitely fallen out of shape. If there is one complaint he has had for this year, that would be it.

It didn't help that he tried to regain his running condition too quick in fall (with the additional 15 lbs he added) and fought leg ailments all AC. I am hopeful this summer allows him to work it off safely before next AC.

Common complaint. Difficult to manage PT during a virtual year. Just ask Little Debbie/Big Deborah!

It seems that PS is, in some ways, tougher on the parents than the plebes. Plebes are kept busy all of the time (outside of ROM in these time of COVID). If they're not at activities, they are cleaning their rooms, learning rates, etc. They are also marching and running and swimming and doing other activities in the hot, humid summers of Annapolis, such that they're pretty exhausted by the end of the day. It's also amazing how quickly plebes make new friends. Thus, they are super busy and -- believe it or not -- don't really have time or energy to think about missing home.

Parents OTOH, are suddenly without. Without being able to call, email or text their plebe (other than the 3 calls the plebe is allowed to make). This can be particularly difficult for parents who've been integrally involved in every aspect of their child's life for the last 18 years. It's all cut off in an instant and they aren't busy 17 hours per day. Thus, they tend to "feel the pain" more than their mid.

To both parents and plebes-to-be . . . USNA has been doing this for more than 175 years. They know what they're doing. COVID has thrown in a few wrinkles, but this too shall pass. Thousands of mids and parents have managed -- you all will too!

> It certainly seems that way on these Forums. Perhaps its having access to too much information.

I don't recall my parents being too broken up by my leaving home. My father spent a short time in the Army, including a Basic Officers program, so he pretty much knew what we were going through (and enjoyed thinking of me going through it :)!). Mom didn't have a clue.

One thing to mention… as PS returns more to normal, plebes spend all day everyday on their feet for the most part. Marching, chopping, PTing. The miles add up fast (in a normal year). It’s not uncommon to add 3-5 miles a day purely in marching and chopping.
