Plebe Summer CO 27' (2023)

USNA sites are your best source of information. Check them often. Herndon dates just changed for the current plebe class and based on social media it is freaking out some parents. This is a lesson in Semper Gumby. Make plans and God and the DoD laugh. The sooner this is accepted the more peace you will have.

Congratulations to your kiddo and to you as parents for raising a high caliber human being.

Typically there are 7 weeks between I Day and PPW. I can’t speak to experiencing them personally as I am a 2024 mom who was affected by Covid so didn’t have those events.

Regardless of the dates, with travel struggles now, I would encourage anyone who is flying to pad their travel dates by at least one day.

NEED HELP.
Does anybody know the exact start and finish dates of Plebe Summer, and then specifically Plebe Parent Weekend.
I have: beginning date (Induction Day) June 29th, 2023
Plebe Parent Weekend August 10,11, and 12. - or is it 11,12 and 13?
Based on last year schedule, plebes got their liberty on Friday - Sunday. So, Aug 11-13 this year. There are activities for parents on Thursday if interested, i.e. visiting the yard, watch noon/evening formation, see academy information exhibits and academic department displays.

Plebe Parent Weekend August 10,11, and 12. - or is it 11,12 and 13?
I would plan on attending Thursday - Sunday......which this year would be August 10 - 13, but be ready for any and all changes!!!

I know the original question on this thread related to how to prepare for Plebe Summer.

1. Run. Then run some more. Go talk to your Cross Country coach or use the Google machine to look at exercises to prevent shin splints. Go to the running store and get measured and get good shoes. Buy a second pair from Amazon. Break both in. Have Mom/Dad ship the second pair during PS.
2. Go run more.
3. Lifting is great, but PS is calisthenics based. Really work on core strength and proper form of your push ups. Use the Amazon machine for an over the door pull up bar. Push yourself and use really good form. Push ups (normal, wide, narrow), sit ups and ab work, flutter kicks, leg levers, burpees of every variation, squats, lunges, etc. Stretch daily. Hydrate. I know most are 17-18 year olds who can down a Red Bull then go run 5 miles now, but your body will break down during PS. You are on your feet all day every day.
4. Sleep - sleep a ton. You will miss it.
5. Eat all the good food. You will miss it too.
6. Hang out with your family. If you have really young siblings develop something special with them. They look up to you. They will miss you more than you know. They don't understand why you are gone, they just miss you. Write them, even to say hello buddy, miss you. They will think they are the most special person ever to get a letter addressed to them. Even write letters before you leave and coordinate them with your parents.
7. Play all the video games, hang out with friends, be a kid.
8. Don't memorize Reef Points. Become familiar with ranks, that will help.
9. Know your sizes - I have worked many I Days and cannot tell you how many new Mids walk to a station and we ask them size to issue a T Shirt and they have no idea. They then tell us mom just bought them. Welcome to adult hood. You don't know your underwear size, not a good start to your Midshipmen career. Also, if something doesn't fit on I Day, tell the detailer, they will get you new sizes until they fit!
10. You will have a roller coaster of emotions. Its okay to. USNA would not admit you if you could not make it. I made it, so can you. Every OG on here made it.
11. Be a good team mate. Give effort. Take it meal by meal, day by day, Sunday to Sunday.
12. Enjoy the ride. Take pictures. I saw a thread on Reddit the other day asking Marines what they wish they had done differently. Over whelming answer was I wish I had more pictures. I know we all have phones these days and its easier.
13. Between now and I Day do not do anything stupid. Stay out of trouble. Follow the speed limit. Do not drink. Do not create another human life. Take care of your body.

Thank you for such a concise summary! I need to share this with my DS! I will emphasize #13...a reason I am not a fan of the senior week at the beach.

I was proud, but at the same time sad for my DS (current Plebe) as he skipped so much SR year out of fear even after missing so much JR year due to covid. He proved to be wiser than his years skipping post prom party that was 'visited' by the police. And then skipping Sr week in Ocean City MD that also proved wise. Much more mature than I was at that age.

Show up in good physical and emotional shape. You will work your body every day during plebe summer so being in shape will prevent repetitive use injuries and help with recovery. Think of it this way, your fitness grade is something you have 100% control over. Why not put the time in and ensure an easy “passing/good” grade..?

Oh, you may hear from some that you should “ditch the boy/girlfriend before you go”. While I agree the odds are not in your favor, it’s always better if you let these thing run their natural course vs doing it as some checklist item.

They call it the 2% club for a reason, some make it! And will inevitably have a wedding at the Chapel the day after graduation with 7 other weddings in line 😜

I think my son is thinking that will be him. His GF is somewhat local (at his old college about 35 minutes away), and he sees her almost every weekend.

If she/we weren't local, I doubt their relationship would last .....

We had one of our USNA 2014 sponsor mids in town for a wedding, who stayed with us, and we caught up on sponsor family news.

Sadly, the running statistic is that 75% of our sponsor family who got married within 2 years of graduation are now divorced from that spouse (often cynically called the “starter marriage”). If they waited 3-5 years, the stats improved hugely in terms of still being married. They figured out they could make a relationship work given military career volatility; it is 180 out from dating a midshipman on the Yard and spending leave periods together. Our data set is 76 couples. The USNA chaplains years ago started counseling engaged couples to wait a year or two while the new officer figured out what their life was going to look like and their potential spouse figured out the same. Especially if it was military-military!

One of the saddest ones we saw implode was a sponsor mid who went Marine. We loved his wife, whip smart, honors Biology grad from UMD, strong, mature, capable. They were devotedly together for 3 years during his time at USNA and got married right after he completed TBS. He was deployed a lot to combat zones. Only job she could get was a barista at Starbucks at Camp Lejeune. She went home to parents in MD to live during deployment, took a few more courses at UMD to get her BSN, got a great job offer in UMD healthcare system. That was pretty much that. They were great at dating while he was a mid. Real life - new assumptions and expectations ran headlong into new realities. They didn’t know what they didn’t know.

When will things be updated online?

Referring to the Plebe Summer Website, Plebe Parent Weekend Guide and info, etc.

So far I know that I day is June 29th and PPW is Aug. 11-13th

Thanks

For PPW, from Friday 12 noon to Sunday whenever they need to return; are they allowed to stay with parents the entire weekend? Do we need to stay local or can we go to a beach near by? Trying to plan ahead.

If past patterns apply, you will join the hundreds of parents returning plebes to the Yard on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Staying local makes sense to maximize time off the Yard.

There are many threads in PPW, have fun browsing.

I predict April for website updates for Class of 2027.

Liberty will end at 2359 Friday and Saturday; although our son's company 2 years ago said 2300 on Friday to avoid any tardiness. Stay local, drive them back through Gate 8 by at least 2330 in case there's a delay and gives them time to walk back to their rooms.

They must return every evening and traffic to get back will be a consideration. They also must be in uniform when in public and outside. They can wear their PT gear when they are inside with family in your hotel/rental.

stay local for sure!! plebes will need to return to the yard each day to sleep.

They will be briefed on what they can and cannot do. Most of us just slept anyways. Nice to be reconnected to the world again.

They will also have a radius the must stay within. We stayed in Cape St Claire, with a private beach access. The distance was perfect for us. Very relaxing.

That was what I was thinking of...looking at VBRO with private beach access at Cape St. Claire. Just stay put. Cook some of his favorite meals and bring his dog so they can be together.
