When we saw our DD on I-Day after the swearing in ceremony, she was struggling with the clownishly large glasses she was issued. Frames are so big they make her ears fold over and fall off every time she turns her head. Does anyone know if plebes ever have glasses remade? Allowed some type of strap? Any info appreciated!

The military designation is "S9". They are affectionately referred to as BCGs (Birth Control Goggles). They are so-named because it is nearly impossible to get a date while wearing them, without a liberal application of Beer Goggles from the other side of the dating equation.

They are typically only required during basic training in all branches of the military. After Plebe Summer, your DD will be allowed to wear her normal glasses.

This is only my opinion, mind you. If you look at photos of the members of the Brigade after reform, you'll see men and women wearing glasses of the more stylish variety. There are regulations as to how "stylish" those can be, however!

Even sunglasses have regulations (which are different by military branch). Some branches allow gold or silver frames, whereas some can only have black frames.

DD has a small melon and when I saw her first pair of BCGs there were pretty altered from their original shape in order to keep them on her head. Your DD can ask her Detailer about getting them adjusted or a new pair. However you can't tell her except in a letter or in two weeks. A detailer may just look at her and tell her to get them adjusted.

I think they eventually make their way to the eye doctor and they will make adjustments for her. And yes, after the summer she can return to her own glasses or contacts.

Ah...the BCG's or Geekers... rarely seen in public after Plebe Summer. Sometimes show up in Cameo appearances for Company photos (they used to do a formal photo each year, and if time permits, a second spirit shot where almost anything goes). Don't worry Mom and Dad, fit of glasses is probably the least of DS/DD worries right now. And yes, if fit or Rx becomes a problem, Medical will take care of it ! I do recall seeing alot of Plebes with straps keeping BCG's in place.

Navy was always pretty good with eye wear. You can usually wear your own, as long as reasonable and within uniform regs. Upon graduation, aviators were ussyed one pair of regular, and one pair of Rx sunglasses a year. I recall I had more glasses than I knew what to do with, since my RX didn't change that much. I believe submariners had a similar deal, as they had special glasses to fit under their OBA.

She should be issued an equally stylish little band to hold them on.
