Hey y’all, are we allowed to have braids in for plebe summer? Or will they take them out and still cut our hair? What are the hairstyles we can have?

Male or female? I can’t answer your question but whoever can will need to know.

Yes female and also I’m just referring specifically for plebe summer like is the haircut necessary if you have braids will they take them out and cut your hair ? Thank you for the info!

Very simple: All women will have their hair cut above the collar. Not the time to be splitting hairs (pun intended). You have bigger things to worry about.

Pick up the phone on Monday and call the USNA Bancroft Hall Beauty Shop at 410-293-3200. The ladies there will be the ones cutting plebe women’s hair on I-Day over at Alumni Hall, and they are experienced with all textures. They are very nice people, civilian workers, and you will enjoy your escapes down there in the next 4 years. Tell them about your hair, ask them what to expect, and what they recommend for your hair and how to have it when you report in.

If Flo is still there (I think she started with the first class with women, ‘80), tell her a former female BattO says hello.

Oh - and just accept it’s nonstop bad hair days throughout PS, but you’ll be so busy and tired you won’t care. It’s not forever, hair grows back, and you will learn all the tips and tricks from upper class women. It’s oddly bonding, and years from now, you and your classmates will howl at the stories you tell at reunions.

See this link - photo gallery at the bottom. That is Flo - click on the thumbnail.

I think Flo might have retired my firstie year or shortly thereafter, but I'm not 100% certain.

If you're talking about braids that require redoing every day, they're going to make you cut your hair. If you're talking about cornrows that will stay in place all summer, you should be fine. My roommate had them and I know other females who did too.

Tributes to persons who make things happen behind the scenes is commendable. BZ to Flo.
I'm curious whether there is still a connection with the civilian workers that we had in my day. Tracy (sp) was the lead barber, loved or feared, depending upon whether you like high & tight or not. Also, we used to to have civilian employee janitors , or I think referred to as "mokes" (no I idea what that stood for) , assigned to each Company area. Our janitor Bobby was part of the Company, and could always be counted on for a smile and greeting no matter how bad a day you were having. The janitors were replaced by a contracted service sometime during my later years, and there was never the same connection.

Have to laugh...when I saw the title, I quickly thought this might be the shortest thread on this Forum. From the male perspective, there is only one "hairstyle". short !

I remember Mister Tracy and went out of my way to avoid is (high and tight giving) clippers.

"Moke" is an old USNA term that went in and out of favor at times - out of favor because some thought it stood for "smokes" and had a racial connotation. I since read that it was
originally an acronym for "Mate Of the Corridor" or MOC.

So if you have conrows they won’t try to take them out and cut your hair? That’s for sure?

The only way YOU will know for sure is to check the primary source - this is all hearsay on an anonymous Internet forum. Scroll up the thread for the info on contacting the USNA Beauty Shop.

I second calling the beauty shop. These are the folks who will be working I day and doing the cuts. They are most familiar with the process and can give your direct information. Be great if you follow up with the info on this forum in case someone else comes searching.

There is a phrase you will soon learn when asked a question by a superior for which you don’t have the answer: “I don’t know, sir/ma’am, but I will find out!”

The only input that I can give at this point is.......you do realize that whatever the result, it will grow back. Shaved me bald years ago, spent years after that thinning hair out at regular haircuts to be able to get a cover over it and now I'm almost back to bald again sans the haircut mechanic. [emoji23]. Whatever happens "this too shall pass".

The last night in PI before going to the IO/Persian Gulf for 110 straight days, I and three shipmates got a Mohawk haircut on the way back to the ship. About an hour after leaving Subic the CO, CDR James Francis Shannahan III opened the sick bay door and said, "Doc, I just made an appointment for you in the barber shop. When he takes it down to bare metal, come see me on the bridge."

That man was the best CO I had in 26 years. I was an HM2, the junior Corpsman on the Cochrane but I would find out later why he was so disappointed in me because of an eccentric haircut. That's another story not related to hair. Anyway, I get a haircut now about once every two months and shave once a week. Being (Ret.) is cool.

Not for sure, that’s why I said should be fine. But yes, your most up to date and accurate information will be from those doing the cutting.
