Plebe Summer Items

Candy, sugary foods, and junk food will be confiscated if mailed.

This isn't true.

It certainly was true during the Plebe summer of 2016. Candy and other "junk food" was in fact confiscated within my DS's company. I can't speak to whether it happened last summer. I would also suspect the degree of enforcement may differ depending on each company-- as are a number of rules/policies.

^ This ... it's long been the case that every Company has its own personality, largely driven by the personalities of the First Class in any given years , but some Company's get and maintain a semi-permanent reputation -- usually as being harder or easier than the norm. While I suspect there is an official policy on sweets and other gedunk, Detailers have some discretion in how much emphasis they want to place on a particular issue.

Your plebe will learn the PS rules/level of enforcement on candy, etc. in his/her company and can advise accordingly in the first call home.

It's definitely Company-dependent. My DS was in N25 during Plebe Summer 2016 and we sent his favorite candy and some homemade treats, all of which he received (and shared ... and consumed).

You are correct....it is VERY company specific. My son was able to keep gummy bears and Werther's I sent.

It's not even company specific. It's against the SOP for detailers to confiscate items that are not contraband.

I plan on bringing nothing other than myself, my wallet, my paperwork, and one good pair of running shoes.
Don’t forget to bring your fully charged phone and charger in a ziplock bag with your name on it as well.

Edit: plus a scientific calculator for placement exams.

A dear teacher of mine gifted me a nice scientific calculator because I was saying I couldn't bring the graphing calculator I got a few years ago (that I assumed would last me through college) so that is now a must to bring. As for the phone: is Ziplock the only acceptable brand of cellular life-line storage or can I opt for the generic brand? :D

Note: Thank you for the reminder to have my phone bagged up. I would have been in the set of plebes who looked woefully unprepared.

You don’t gift your teacher to show your appreciation but it’s the other way around?

When you lead the way and coin the phrase you are “IT”! Like “TexMex” as a specific cuisine! Don’t forget to buy boxes of Kleenex for your family members before you leave either!
Thank you for the reminder to have my phone bagged up.
I am sure you would have come to a similar solution as well!

Trying to figure out schedule for family weekend. All I see online is August 9 to August 12. Don't the plebes get to leave and stay with family for a night or two? Does it have to be family or can it be a family friend? Anyone have some approximation of a schedule? The info for this summer isn't up, at least that I could find, and last year's info has been removed.

Some companies have a reputation of being more strict than others, or they have certain "reputations" to uphold. DS was also a plebe in the summer of 2016. The detailers change midway through PS, and each company will get a new set of detailers after about 3 weeks. His PS company's reputation was for stressing the physical fitness aspect , going above and beyond the usual predawn PEP, during PS.

Also, it is a nice touch to include a little extra in allowed goodies from home, enough for the roommate, or if you are feeling very generous, the entire company. They will meet their roommate for the first time on Iday.

No. Unless something drastically changes (doubtful) they do not get to stay away for any nights during PPW. Friday they are dismissed following noon formation and have to be back on the yard by 2200. Saturday leave begins after the formal parade and they again must return by 2400. Sunday they are allowed to leave at 0800 and must return by 1800. They are allowed to leave the area within a certain number of miles. (DC Baltimore etc. allowable) For visiting families there are tours Friday, a brief with the showing of the plebe summer video before noon formation. Families can eat lunch in King Hall if desired and see their plebe's room. The room visit is the only opportunity until 2/C weekend. Saturday morning is the formal parade. Hope this helps.
