Hello! I know for plebe summer, girls are expected to cut their hair to chin-length. But, I wanted to confirm that girls (especially black/mixed girls) are not allowed to have their hair 2 inches from their scalp? If so, what do most black girls with natural hair to with their hair during plebe summer? Do they cut it real short, get braids, or cornrow their hair? If anybody had any idea, that would be great! Thank you!

With luck, you’ll get a current or recent mid to help out here.

This seems to be an older document, but there are some good nuggets in there. Uniform and grooming regs are updated regularly, so any regs quoted here may not be current.

If you’re up for it, call the USNA Beauty Shop, and ask for one of the employees who works with women who have African-American or extra curly hair. The ladies there are very nice, have been working with exhausted plebes and mids for years. Perhaps the famous Flo is still there. Just be your nicest anxious plebe-to-be self on the phone, and you can get deep into details on all things hair.

Oh - and my perennial tip for when your hair grows to bun length: Capezio Bunhead Hair Pins.

Actually, none of the academies require that anymore. From class of 2021, no longer a requirement.

sorry, just for some clarification- the two inch hair thing is no longer a rule?

This is the link to current USNA Instructions (written policies).

Look at Uniform Regulations, and the Chapter on Grooming. Very important to note the basic instruction is 2014, but at the top of the document are all the changes (“CH”) since then, so you have to check those.

thank you! that's exactly what I was looking for. If I'm reading correctly, plebe summer has slightly different rules than the rest of the year, and the 2 inches rules is not for plebe summer. I will still call to make sure.

The beauty shop staff can speak to hair styles they have seen work and any hair care tips and tricks to deal with a rough hair summer. They are civilian staff who would not be responsible for advising on current regulations.

I saw plebes with braided hair this past summer. That said, the braids did not go much past the natural hairline so I doubt it was very long.

According to DD you don't want to show up on I Day needing a cut or braid. They don't have time to spend on anything special and pretty much give everyone the same style. Plus when you show up in Annapolis the day before you have a special link to the other female Mids. The hair length is the bond. I see the nods given to one another. LOL. Boys don't get that until they visit the barber.
