Plebe summer numbers?

I went to pick up a 2/c sponsor mid who was checking out of 1st set detail this afternoon, and cruised by bunches of plebes outside in various spots, phones stuck to ears, while 2nd set detailers eyeballed watches. I didn't see anybody wailing and crying... I hope 2020 parents got some good phone time.

Sponsor mid said she thought about 20 had permanently left the class. Shared lots of funny stories. The usual number of chit-surfers have appeared. One plebe failed to stand when "Attention on deck" was called, when an officer entered the room. When asked why he didn't stand, plebe stated: "I can't. My feet cannot hold my body weight." I would assume an educational discussion then followed....

We asked our son today about the drop out rate. He said, "I don't think it is many. No one in my company has left." I was again reminded that his life really exists within his company and his knowledge of anyone else is limited. Case in point, he has a a friend from his high school who is also a plebe. These two kids are in "adjacent" companies - (E and F for example). Even though they stand feet from each other in formations and drills, my son has no knowledge of his HS classmate. "What happens in company, stays in company" apparently.

I feel certain that plebe was encouraged to lay the weight of the world off his shoulders and take a well-deserved rest for his poor, tired feet.

Hahahahaha! Capt MJ I can't stop laughing. I can't even fathom what would of happened to us if we had done that! I went through well before PT cards existed and a lot more 'free for all' when it came to in the hall training. A buddy of mine working staff confirmed its around 20. That is so few! We lost 9 alone in my sister company Plebe Summer.

Yeah Plebe Summer you are sort of blind to anything outside your company. Unless he has caught up to his buddy at donut hour there is exactly zero time to talk to anyone outside your room mates (and those conversations usually revolve around who is going to shower first or the menu for the day). Once the AC year gets going he will have time to catch up.

I'm going to presume that the plebe remaining seated is not due to a legitimate medical issue...

Sounds like the platoon should do an hour of rack and uniform races while this plebe sits and watches. I guarantee that plebe will stand the next time an officer walks in.

My DS said his company is leading in attrition rates at 5. One was due to a chronic knee injury, and he left on very positive terms. Not so sure about the others.

Plebe noted he was too tired to stand and his feet hurt. No medical issues. Detail is more and more constrained each year with can't-do's, but I believe the detailers were able to assist him in recalibrating his self-assessment of his Metatarsal Malaise.
The nicknames this plebe just generated for himself will follow him into ac year in his company, and he will have to exert himself to counteract the Incident of the Feet.

Meanwhile, I introduced sponsor mid detailer to the big bowl of Epsom salts in warm water for her tired, sweaty, "fragrant," and callused feet, and handed her the tube of peppermint foot lotion. The secrets of military footcare, part of the less glamorous professional lore.

Spoke to DS yesterday. Apparently his company hasn't had anyone drop in the past 3 years, but has got some holes in it this go around. One squad is apparently down to 6 people. We asked if the detailer of that group seemed unduly harsh, and he replied no, that in fact the detailer was despondent over so many drops from his group and was working within chain to figure out what was happening and what they could do. DS figures it was just bad luck of the draw. DS and his squad mates were feeling badly for the detailer, suggesting that (in his words) they were suffering from a little Stockholm Syndrome.

I am wondering if 1 or 2 kid(s) leaving opens the door for others to leave? Like a chain reaction. Also, this might be a silly question: what uniform do Plebes wear on Parents weekend? Is it the same uniform as 2nd-4th year Mids?

I do think there is something to a plebe with serious doubts seeing someone else take action after voicing their reasons. Peer influence in a different way. "If they can face mom and dad, so can I." I just got back from running sponsor mid 1st set detailer to BWI to go on leave block. I asked her what her sense was of those who left from her group. One was the child of an active duty member (being deliberately vague here), who felt pressured from the get-go to go USNA but felt they couldn't say "no" until they tried it. Two seemed to be totally surprised and disinclined to accept the 24/7 military environment - hadn't done the real homework about fit, just focused on the competitive chase after nom and appointment. She was privately glad one plebe had decided to go. He was known to brag about his early LOA and his stats. Then, he was not immediately top of the heap for rates and PT ability compared to other plebes, did not help others and his attitude problem worsened. He finally decided he was not in the right place.

PPW Uniform should be Summer White, the short-sleeved white shirt pants/skirt with combination (combo) cover. Bring a Tide stick. They will be paranoid about stains.

How many kids are in a squad? Just wondering about the squad that's now down to six kids....about how many left?

I would have to agree with previous posts, regarding detailers. Listening to some of them (we have two that come over nightly) about some of the excuses. Class of 2020 will have more DOR than normal as compared to past years. For those of us that live in Annapolis area, the heat /humidity is brutal this year (should bring some smiles to those who have come before with no AC at Mother B), with numerous black flag days already and more to come. A lot of complaints about the heat. In one company, there have 2 heat related injuries (dehydration) over the weekend. I saw a few on my friends at church on Sunday and offered words of encouragement, dont let PS beat you, embrace the suck and power through it. I know that they will make it through.

I dont know when football tryouts start during PS but I do know that the crew training/cycles should start soon. It will give some a cool respite as your on the water or in the boathouse a lot. Good luck to the remaining plebes and remember, that no one can stop time, PS will be over before you know it.

Love reading these tales.

Just an FYI, 26 have officially separated from the class of 2020.
Wow, that's so sad considering how hard they've worked to get in & unfortunate for those kids who were on the wait list, is 26 high # or is this normal?

Only 13 quit last year. Someone mentioned in the thread above that the Class of 2018 had only 8 quit.

The weather this summer is much worse than most in recent years. Class of '18 has one of the mildest summers. That probably has some effect on staying or quitting.

My Plebe seems to have settled into a mode of determined resignation - it's going to suck, I know it's going to suck, I'll get to the end.

My biggest concern is that he - and others - will get to the end of Plebe Summer and say, "huzzah! now the easy part." And well all know that there is no easy part.
