Hi All,
First off let me say thank you for all the great info on this forum. I have read a lot of posts over the past year as our DS began the process of first applying for NASS and then to be a midshipman. He received an LOA pending medical at the end of December!! We are absolutely thrilled for him!

My DH and I like to be proactive and we booked a room at the Historic Inn of Annapolis for I-day. I am looking for a home to rent for PPW but I don't want to book w/o knowing the dates and how long we should plan on staying. I looked at USNA calendars and only see I-day date of 6/28/2018. Anyone know when PPW is? My DH counted 6 weeks and said book it for 8/8 -8/12/2018. Is he right as always? ;) - should we stay 4 days or is that too long/short?

Hope this helps...

FYI: when we were booking, we discovered that the total cost to rent the houses we looked at were the same for either 4 or 7 nights, as the more nights booked, the rate/night dropped! So we booked 7, and will decided closer to the weekend how many we actually physically stay. It was that way for 2 different properties we were interested in. I’m not sure if his is normal for this area this time of year, or anomalies but made that decision easy!!

How long you stay depends on you, including how far you have to travel, whether you want to see things not involving your plebe during your visit (i.e., before and after PPW), etc. Plebes usually are free from Friday noon until Sunday around 6 pm, having to return at night and for a couple of events (e.g., plebe parade). There will be some activities for parents on Thursday. Nothing at USNA before or after, other than general visiting.

One thing to consider for those renting houses or those staying in hotels that are not walking distance from USNA. Your plebe will not be able to stay with you overnight (unless they change 40+ years of policy). Thus you have to get him/her back to the Yard each night. There are ~1200 plebes all trying to get back to the same place at the same time. There are only a few ways to get to the Yard and those roads become very crowded, very quickly. And your plebe will not want to be late for taps.

Thus, leave well in advance. Figure the 5-minute trip will take at least 30. The 10-minute trip an hour. And so on.

Did you use vrbo/home away to book or another site? Thanks for the info!

I looked at all of them, they didn’t seem to be different price wise. Ultimately we have contracted on Home Away.

We used Home Away for both PPW and Wedding at the Chapel three years after graduation. It worked out great for both events. Easy for many to recharge and take some down time. Love Plebes "my own included" leaping out of cars to make Gate One during PPW.
