Plebe Summer - Second Phone Call on Sunday July 25th

"Build Me Up, Buttercup"!?! I'm surprised they all know that song. My kids are well versed in the oldies, since hubby has been lead singer in an oldies band for years. Their friends usually say, "Where in the world did you learn that dumb song?" My kids reply, "It's a classic! Don't you know it?" Glad to hear DS is with like-minded kids!:yllol:

After reading the threads.....I feel like I am the only parent that did not receive a great call. My plebe was still down, said he would not quit, but was not liking life at all. Plans on not making it in the sport he loves the most, has reinjured an old injury & seems disconnected from everything. Could not focus on the phone call & has told us absolutely nothing about what he has been doing. What are we to do?

Just be encouraging. I remember during plebe summer (USMA) I told my parents to leave the down payment for my dorm at the University of Florida in tact b/c I didn't think I wanted to be at USMA. I was just having a bad day; probably the same thing with your son. I stuck with it, did well and graduated from USMA.

Build Me Up, Buttercup was played over the credits of There's Something About Mary, which came out a few years back starring Ben Stiller and Cameron Diaz.

My children learned the song from watching that movie.

Haha...Mihoser, "There's Something About Mary" came out in 1998, which doesn't seem like that big a deal, but most of these plebes would have been about 6 years old. Granted that's a lot newer than the song, but in the eyes of a teenager, 1998 is still ancient history. (Even though to this old timer it seems like yesterday!) Then again, my 14-year-old daughter just discovered "The Matrix" (1999)!

My son said that he didn't know the song (Build me up Buttercup) but could pick up on it pretty quickly - he told me to check out the song on You Tube, assuming I had never heard of it:shake:

It's also being used right now as the background music for a light beer ad. The guy tells his girlfriend it's time to go window shopping. She thinks for wedding related items, but he's looking for beer with a window that lets you see that the beer is cold.

The connection between Build Me Up, Buttercup and light beer evades me.
