Plebe Summer/Year

Other than the honor list posted above, you will attempt to qualify pistol and rifle Plebe Summer. You have the change to earn Sharpshooter and Expert on both.
 
A Varsity "N"

Both my Son and I have them but neither of us did it as a plebe.

Ehhh, my best friend, roommate as Ensigns and best man at my wedding is a retired flag officer. He earned several "regular" N's, recognition as an All-America and World Military Champion. I think he might be even fonder of his Black N. Funny thing, when he was a newly promoted one star, he had a meeting with a four star who had been the conduct officer at USNA when the Black N was given.

Back when the Earth was still cooling, part of Plebe knowledge was a John Paul Jones quote. . .
"He that will not risk will not win"
 
I however, was VERY glad to have avoided getting a Black N during my time at USNA. It was close call several times but luckily, I was unscathed
 
There are a lot of good stories surrounding the Black N "winners"....but not recommended for Plebes !
 
Apparently, Senator John McCain was dangerously close to getting a Black N.
His fellow Midshipmen insulated him from the "honor", however.
Apparently that was a good thing, because they say that he may have been thrown out.
 
One of my best friends has a Black N with Star. That is like seeing a unicorn. I had a lot of demerits, tours and restriction days during my time but never a Black N.
