Is it possible for a plebe to get a weekend leave to attend the funeral of a close family member, if the occasion should arise?

Active Duty Military normally are given emergency leave to attend the funeral of an immediate family member. This includes midn's and cadets - even plebes.
If a death in the family occurs and you midn or cadet is not in contact with you - you may get notice through the American Red Cross.
At the Academies - if you have a contact number of their Company officer (TAC officer) at West Point you may call them.
The decision to release for a funeral lies with their Military Chain of command (as opposed to their midn or cadet coc).

There are way too many unmentioned factors to answer that question. As Mom mentioned normally emergency or bereavement is available, but there always can be mitigating circumstances. My grandmother died during my Plebe Year - unfortunately the weekend before exam week, I didn't even ask for leave and my family fully understood. My son was in WESTPAC when his grandmother died, again it was understood that he would not attend.

A clue: always use the American Red Cross to notify the service member's command of a death in the family - it just works better.

Friend's dad died the day he arrived at USNA. He stayed the rest of the week so he would not be completely behind, and than he went home with his fam for a bit.
