Plebes Dropping Already

I know there’s a lot going on now but we in the mid-Atlantic are on Jim Cantore watch. Annapolis will be on the dirty side of the storm tomorrow night and Tuesday with 4+ inches of rain expected.

Ds said the pallets of sandbags were visible from his window. Good vibes to all affected by the pending tropical storm. Nothing like a little weather to spice up the Covid era plebe summer!!!!

Plebe Summer as a detailer was an amazing experience, and by far the most educational time at the Academy. Seems like it’s the only time where the work being done by mids somewhat resembles the dynamic of real leadership in the Fleet.

Seeing the growth in the Plebes every day was what made it the most rewarding: Watching them go from a deer in headlights the first night, to eventually being able to tune out much of the stress we imparted on them to focus on the task at hand. They went from individuals to collectivist members of a team, and started to hold each other accountable even when they didn’t realize we’re watching. They went from total strangers to having each other’s backs during what for many of them were their most difficult moments in life. Being able to guide them through these challenges was a tremendous honor.

On call today DS told me ALL his detailers were ”squared away” - a term I never heard him use before 😂. But I think it means he’d like to be like them someday. I think it’s an important role during plebe summer - to show the plebes what’s possible, and that it’s going to be “worth it”. In pictures with detailers and plebes it’s almost comical to see the difference between “squared away” Detailers and not very “squared away” plebes. Thanks to you and all other detailers.
A quick question if you have time - Are ALL detailers from the same company they worked in?

Yes. Each company is responsible for training its own plebes in general, though those detailers are not with them at every evolution. For example, weapons and sailing are taught by activity-specific detailers. But in general, from when they wake to when they sing “B&G” with any gray space in between, plebes are trained by detailers who are 1/C and 2/C from their own company.

Do certain companies have reputations one way or the other for being harder or stricter than others?

Yes.
It can change, though, with time and new leadership. Old patterns shift or break up, new ones form.
Nothing you can do to control it, you surf the wave your board is on.
So... what reputations exist today? Are any companies famous or infamous for anything in particular?

He really dreads it when they get out the mops and buckets to clean up their sweat.

I guess our brains are changing and adapting to interpret autocorrect...I gleaned "mops and buckets" and didn't realize you had an autocorrect or Siri issue until you mentioned it!

> Your brain will be totally converted when you read "swaps and Cadillacs" instead of mops and buckets. :) I think that was the first thing we learned at NAPS,,,but don't recall every using either at USNA.

There’s “Free 19.” Legendary for decades now. The Bear Sharks.

I will defer to @Kierkegaard or other current mids if they want to comment or just keep the door to some things closed. My info is second-hand these days since we are distanced from the sponsor family.

Such a purist, Devil Doc. It must drive you batty when you hear someone say that a ship is “tied up” in Norfolk. As a former swabbie, you know that only traffic “ties up” and that ships are “moored” to a pier.
I had to choose between staying USN brainwashed or fall under the spell of my job in public education.

The choice was easy. The pull from both is mind numbing.

Is there still Stalag 17?

Just got a debrief from DD the Detailer, who worked first set. She confirmed that a class may finally be able to say, with great credibility, that they had the last “real” Plebe Summer. That would be ‘23, because apparently ‘24 is getting off fairly easy.

The detailers were significantly limited in what they could do to “push” or “encourage” or “reprimand” the plebes. And even with those actions that were permitted, there were maxes to the effort that could be required. So the detailers had to be creative in how they got their point across. She was resourceful, but said having certain tools taken away made things that much tougher.

Also, PEP was severely scaled back because the number of plebes getting injured or sick (not counting CV19) was greater than usual. Seems like this is empirically known across the regiment, and not just anecdotal by company. Black-flag conditions also limited the amount of outdoor activity.

All in all, DD loved the experience, though exhaustion overcame all detailers toward end of first set. She feels great accomplishment getting her squad to a certain level of competence in much less time than usual. Though it seems there’ll need to be some “supplementary” plebe training stuff done after school year starts. That’s not surprising.

She barely has her voice — apparently the detailers in her company went through enormous amounts of honey to save their voice boxes. But she’s in great spirits and looks forward to seeing the plebes again at Reform.
