I know this is way early but my son will be in the class 0f 2022, we had planned a surprise cruise before he enters pleb summer for May but I have to move the date due to finishing up HS graduation testing , no dates will work until November /December of 2018- any way of finding out when the Plebs have to report back from Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks for 2018?

Which Academy? you may want to post in that Academy's thread. Just FYI, at USMMA, the calendar is always changing, or, more accurate, last minute changes seem to be made, or allowances issued, etc., , and we have learned to not trust any dates until the last minute.

Thanksgiving leave is pretty set each year from last duty Wednesday to Sunday of the week so I would say that it is out for a cruise.

Christmas would work as they will be off the week between Christmas and New Years. The start and end date may change a day or two each year but it would be safe to assume the days between.

This year, mids had to be back from winter break on Jan. 4 (a Thursday). They were able to leave after their last exam, which varied from roughly Dec. 15-19 depending on what courses they were taking. They likely won't know their departure date until some time in November when the exam schedule is released but will know the last possible date as soon as the 2018 fall academic calendar is released (of course, pending duty, sports, etc.).

If you want to do a cruise, spring break may be an option. At least one cruise line operates (or did in the past) out of Baltimore (very convenient) and the last couple of years had a cruise that coincided exactly with USNA's spring break. Mids in good academic status typically will have that entire time unless they are involved in a sport that trains over the break -- and they will obviously know this well in advance.

They should also know their summer plans sometime in the spring and, once set, those dates are pretty firm. Depending on what they decide to do and thus the amount and timing of their leave, there may be some time then.

I don't see a T-giving cruise working . . . ever . . . while at USNA. Sorry.

^^^

True, but if you can't count on USNA: (1) attending a bowl game; (2) the game being in Annapolis or anyplace close to where you live; (3) getting the same offer they got this year in terms of a late return if you attend. Also, needing to be someplace on the 28th (or any time that week) would largely vitiate any attempt to take a cruise during winter break. It's obviously a great deal for those who live close to Annapolis -- and really nice to have that support for the team.:groupwave:

usna1985...spot on (what else is new?) AND... it's a whole different dynamic with kiddo now that often isn't as interested in just "going along with the plan" . Been there and one that e.g. "sorry about Thanksgiving but I've just too much to do...see you at Christmas...maybe...and speaking about Christmas, planning on being home for a few days and then going out of town to be with roomie and friends".
Not saying this will happen to you but better to be prepared for the unexpected and be flexible. Have made a dozen plans over the past three years and maybe two have come to fruition.

Yea, thanks for all the advise- opted to do a trip closer to home just before he leaves for Iday. Cruise will have to wait

Good advice given as usual - better to not plan anything big too far ahead. Time off plans have changed numerous times for our DD over the past few years. At this point you really can't predict what sport or club or other activity your Plebe-to-be may end up getting involved with.
