DS has been awarded NROTC-MO and has been accepted to several schools including having applied to PLNU based on some data we found suggesting the USD NROTC Consortium was a good choice. He has yet to make a final decision and so any general background / info on the school and consortium etc (positive or negative) would be appreciated

First, congratulations to your DS. There is nothing better than being a Marine officer.

I can't speak to the colleges or even the units. I would surmise, due to proximity to Pendleton, that there would be some interesting training opportunities there. I would say make sure your DS understands:

1. How often, and when he will be required to be at USD. Is PT held at USD or Point Loma. What about Naval Science classes (some schools the officers travel, in others the midshipmen travel). What about Lab?

2. How transportation to USD will be handled. How long is the drive at the times he will need to be at USD? Does the unit provide transportation? Car pooling assistance?

I'm sure there are other things I'm not thinking of. Just want to make sure he thinks about the challenges me may or may not face.

Point Loma Nazarene University sits on some the best oceanside real estate in all of Southern California. I can't imagine how long the commute takes from that campus to USD - it isn't far but the traffic! I suppose that if others are doing it, they have figured out a way but wow. That group of schools has easy access to Coronado, MCRD San Diego and the Naval Base in San Diego. Camp Pendleton isn't far away.

Thanks. I figured it would be a great place for NROTC-MO but DS is unsure as it’s a relatively unknown school (at least in the Midwest)

Oooh, enjoy the visit! My daughter and I visited in January (not ROTC, but for athletics). Not being from California, it was shocking to me that instead of bike racks in front of the dorms they have surf board storage!! My DD decided to attend there and will be transferring in the Fall, I don’t know anything about ROTC, hopefully he can connect with some cadets during the visit.

My daughter is most excited about her team (of course) and the applied health sciences program. The small class sizes and the school’s health science reputation. And the ocean, she is definitely excited about the ocean.

PLNU is freaking awesome. Great school in great location. You're essentially living on a cliff on the beach in a lively part of San Diego (not in downtown so you don't have to deal with that schereade). You're about 10 minutes from MCRD San Diego, 20-25 from 32nd Street, 20 to NAS North Island, and 5-10 from NB Point Loma. (W/O Traffic)Pendleton is anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour depending how fast you drive and where on Pendleton you're going.

PT is mostly held at USD to my knowledge, as it's the host school. I hear they have a good program, and I'd recommend trying to shadow a MIDN for a day.
PLNU is about a 10-20 minute commute to USD depending on traffic. You're close enough to not have to take the 5 if you don't want to, but it's not a short jog/bikeride (USD is at the top of a hill).

Feel free to fire any questions about the area my way, I happen to be relatively familiar with the area.

Keeping a close eye here for any insight given. DS received NROTC-MO scholarship initially for SDSU but after Preview Day at PLNU he decided PLNU was the place for him. DS successfully transferred placement there within a few days. DS sought out any NROTC representation on campus and found out there is none after contacting office at USD. Everything for PLNU NROTC students is located at USD.

DS is hoping to room with a fellow Mid so they’re on the same schedule.

Hi - it sounds like maybe both our DS are in the same boat, so to speak (LOL).
FYI - We’re scheduled to be out there Apr 23-25 for a PLNU campus visit and to meet with USD but as I was told last week by from USD NROTC, there are very few MO at PLNU, so there’s a chance they are the only ones for Class of ‘23....so if your DS wishes to reach out to mine to chat, please let him know he is welcome to do so. (Msg me for email info)

Congrats to your son making a decision @Marineff, and good luck to your son deciding on the right school @grahamtorr65

If they ever go to a women's soccer game, they should see my DD out on the field!

Yes, going cross town has its own set of challenges. My oldest is at a host school, but they have a cross town satellite that has all of their own classes and PT but come to her school for lab, and then there are a few smaller affiliate schools that only have one or two cadets (Army) and they come to her school for everything. At the end of the day, being at the right school is number one and I can understand why PLNU would feel like the right place, the community on campus felt really good when my DD visited. One thing I will mention, as SD is such an expensive place to live, being able to live on campus for about 11k a year including food, is crazy reasonable, especially being right on the ocean! My DD is a rising junior so her and her soccer buddies will have an on campus apartment (only available to juniors and seniors), and it is the same cost as a dorm room. Something to think about though once your sons satisfy their 2 years on campus is they might want to find an apartment in the middle of the two campuses, but that is a few years down the road, so no rush for that!

New to posting and cannot Msg yet :( or I would.

Another nugget we learned at the early April Preview Day was that Freshman are not allowed to have a car on campus with the only exception being for ROTC students.

We were just lamenting that very issue so this is good news indeed...(and no rush on the messaging as DS is not 100% decided yet but if/when he does, it would be cool for the only incoming MO Mids to hang out)

Hi there - Just an FYI that after we visited the campus and met with another NROTC student my son, Aaron has decided that he will attend PLNU as an MO
His email is as follows if your DS is interested in chatting or considering roommate options etc

Thanks
