Hello everyone,
I am a Cross Country, Track & Field, and PT team member. I'm varsity for both Cross and a Track, and have very strong PT scores.

Yesterday I took my CFA with my JROTC instructor... I did awful.

Pull Ups: 6 (couldn't do the seventh fully)
Bball Throw : 58 feet
Push Ups : 46
Sit Ups : 56
Mile Run: 5:46
Shuttle Run: 8.48

The reason I'm so frustrated with my scores is that I am typically very good at both push ups and sit ups. During PT, I did 75 in one minute, whereas we had two for the CFA and I only could pull of 56. For push ups, cadence I was able to do 72 whereas yesterday I struggled with 46.
I have been training hard for this test, doing bench, push ups, and doing pull ups with any free time I have at home or during XC practice. I expected a low pull up score since they're my weak point (I couldn't do a single one until last year), but the push ups and especially sit ups where honestly embarrassing.
How should I go about fixing this? My instructor was surprised when he asked my typical push ups and I told him, I know I'm going to retake the test as these scores weren't at all what they should have been minus the running.

Thanks guys, any advice is appreciated.

I’d say you should take the CFA again, sounds like you just had an off day. Other than that, just keep practicing push ups and pull ups to failure. I like to do 3 sets of each and on the last set I go until I can’t anymore. That helped me get from 1 pull up to 12

I'll try it. Thanks a ton!

Good reason to also practice the exact series of events associated with the CFA. Fatigue is also a factor when taking a series of events in succession, so you can't just look at your success on stand-alone items. Lots of older threads on how to improve.

Relax and do not over think it. You got this. My DD was so worried that she was pucking on side the track 400M into the run. She is a DIV1 track athlete.

Self induced stress can have a lot to do with your scores.

The first time I took the CFA I failed miserably. I also run cross country/track and ended up with a mile time of 7:52, which is slower than my 5k pace. I would work on your muscular endurance so you don't tire yourself out for the last few events. My second time around I improved in every category...including a 6:43 mile.

You can take it again. Don't sweat it (yet)!

Try drinking pre-workout before you take your CFA. Not too much because then your stomach will be bothering you, but trust me--a small amount helps!

Rest is half the battle, you know. Of course, when you're fighting for something, you need time to plan, train, develop, and eventually execute. However, if you've forgotten your resting time, you've already lost. Get a good amount of sleep during your break and charge into your CFA regenerated!

You've got this!

Good luck and go Army!
