Possible flu outbreak at USAFA BCT class

Much ado about a minor annoyance. IMO

This flu spreads quickly, and isn't pleasant, but it's not the freaking plague! We are starting to get (formerly) sick basics back into our flights.

Well, it's good to know that some of the basics are getting back to normal. Maybe the worst is over?

It's important to remember the basics are not "quarantined" and those with "flu-like symptoms" are, at best "isolated." Everything official put out by the Academy said the rationale was to limit the threat of exposure to the community -- basics going in every direction -- and that old cadre were leaving, and new cadre coming in, and that "those able" would be going to Jacks as scheduled.

yes, some upperclassmen also have these flu-like symptoms. the academy is doing its best to stop the spread, and if possible training will resume. i've already recieved one of my basics back

On one of the other Academy forums a parent posted that their son was one of the first ones that became ill, and it is believed that the swine flu was brought into the Academy by an upperclassmen that had been at Lackland AFB. The son also said that it was not the reported high eighties but closer to 300 basics and others that were isolated. Is there an upperclassman that can comment on those numbers? I realize it's just a flu and these are healthy young adults. Got it. It would be interesting to know how contagious this is from a curiousity standpoint. I wonder if they will be dropping like flies out there in Jack's Valley. I wouldn't want to be the person in charge of medical care at the USAFA right now.

Well, my dear son who got home yesterday reported that there were some kids "isolated" in the room next to him, sharing the same bathroom he was using.

We keep having him walk through a nice Lysol mist - just kidding!!!

Clarification?

It's important to remember the basics are not "quarantined" and those with "flu-like symptoms" are, at best "isolated." Everything official put out by the Academy said the rationale was to limit the threat of exposure to the community -- basics going in every direction -- and that old cadre were leaving, and new cadre coming in, and that "those able" would be going to Jacks as scheduled.

According to the CDC definition: Quarantine: applies to people that may be exposed a contagious disease and may or may not become ill. Isolation: applies to people that are KNOWN to be ill with a contagious disease. So to be accurate, most of the Basics are "quarantined" until confirmation or not of being contagious of the swine flu. And those that are confirmed swine flu cases are than "isolated". So in this definition, ALL the Basics are quarantined on campus, so that explains no Doolie Day out.

I know over 100 got sick one day. Apparently, isolating the sick basics worked pretty well. My flight had 2 in isolation, when I left, and had received one back.

The flu did seem to spread much faster than most. Most of the sick basics developed symptoms within a few days of each other.

...Elmendorf has a couple people with it as well. I thought I had gotten away from it, lol.

Thanks Hornet! Are you having to look in on these sickies? Wear a mask! Wash your hands!

Has the flu made it into the general population at the AFA, or is it still primarily limited to basics?

I got a letter today from KT, he was in the hospital.. but I am hoping he is out now.. following some posts by his mom on Facebook he was able to call her so she knew he was ill, but doing better...

I believe it did hit the main population because there are some cadets sick with H1N1 at Elmendorf I think. Some (cadet) theories going around are that a summer seminar kid (there was one with H1N1 earlier in the summer) gave it to a cadre who then went and worked BCT. Just a theory, but the quarantine has finally slowed it down. Lots got it though. H1N1 isn't any worse than the Influenza A virus I hear. Most are feeling better after 2 days.

I don't have to go near those biohazards! LOL I am GE cadre, so I stay in my half of Jack's Valley and live in Sijan up on the hill. Keep those petri dishes aways from me! haha. :shake:

This story just showed up on drudgereport.com. Is there anyway to find out if our basic is participating in Jacks Valley?

Keep sending him letters. Hopefully he is writing back letters or post cards. He should be saying something on the lines of "The obstacle course kicked my butt" or "I wish I was in Jacks". We usually received 2-3 letters/post cards a week. Either I, my wife, or my son's girl friend. That's the best way to get info. Straight from the horse's mouth. later... mike...

I will scour the demons pics on Webguy to see...I believe I know his face well enough to recognize him now...Often you cannot see the name tags on the pics from Jacks Valley. I saw two pics of my basic yesterday. She looks like she is doing fine. I am sure yours is too. Please tell your wife thank you for emailing me. I will send more pics as I find them.

I have seen my son setting up tents in Jacks valley on Webguy. Therefore I know that he is there and not in quarantine. Hopefully he will not get sick.

i have the pleasure to see hornetguy like everyday ;)

hehe, glad your hair was in regs today. I had to send a few to get one plus a few had to endure the joys of dry shaving with a single blade razor. ouch! Enjoying GE?
