Possible Government Shutdown

My wife just got off the phone with our DS who is USMMA Class of 2012; he's usually pretty up on things and as was noted by Line In The Sand he indicates there is no official news, etc. on this. His understanding is that most if not all of the USMMA staff are classified as non-essential personnel but as far as he knows none of them have been given any direction, etc. I believe as has been noted that there are no definite facts/official plans that have been disseminated/promulgated as of now. Whether they have been formulated and not promulgated, approved or not approved through the chain of commend that RADM Greene reports through (MARAD Administrator Matsuda and SECTRANS LaHood) etc is really anybody's guess and speculation as of this minute as far as I know.

For me, I feel for everyone who will be affected by this situation Military Personnel; Government Employees (essential and non-essential); our kids who are mids, cadets, etc.; and as has been noted really all of us who are citizens who both receive the benefits of Government and pay for it. If we're going to speculate or cogitate on things that lean away from the exact issues as it affects the current Regiment of Midshipmen at USMMA over the next couple of days/weeks though - then my vote is we all realize the budget that is being debated and hasn't been enacted/approved is for the period that started on LAST October 1st and runs through THIS September 30th and another issue that we ought to all be wondering/worrying about is how is this NOT going to happen again for the Budget that starts this October 1st and runs through September 30th, 2012... It always boggles my mind that if our homes and/or businesses tried to go to a bank and borrow money (of just about any amount - forget the size of debt we are talking about here) and said we wanted a loan without being able to show a plan or budget as to how it gets repaid we'd either get a) blanket refused & laughed at; b) run through a "wringer" and then still likely refused; or c) sent to some "shylock" who took something very valuable for collatoeral and had such a high interest rate it would normally be referred to as a "fig"

How the rate the Government is paying for short term bonds aka T-Bills isn't more than the current 0.03 - 0.05% for a four week note is beyond me. If they don't have a Government shutdown I'd suggest that this would be a far more interesting and timely topic for the dreaded economics classes than some of the things the mids were upset about and were the topic of a couple of threads last trimester.

In the meantime I hope this works out and when we have real news/facts on this topic it'll all be something most of us except the mids who were hoping for a second spring break of a week or two off can be happy about.

From the rumors I hear the teachers will most likely not come to work BUT the essential services (food, security) will remain. So the mids will still have Delano food to look forward to this weekend. I don't think they are kicking everyone off campus no matter how much they all want a long weekend!

Last word from the rumor mill was they were panning "activities" for the regiment to occupy their time in case of the shutdown and class cancellations. It does not appear that they will be sent home but then again it's anyone's guess.

I am sure that you meant "planning". Looks like Recognition was a bit early. I could think of lots of activities for Plebes. . . . . .
