I'm a prospective candidate for West Point c/o 2027. I play baseball and at our last game, I suffered some sort of knee injury. I'm currently waiting to get an MRI to see the extent of the damage. I've seen 2 physical trainers and 1 doctor and so far they have all given me conflicting reports. That being said they believe it is something in the meniscus or ACL. I'm currently praying that it is just a sprain and doesn't require surgery. My question is if it does require surgery what is the process of letting West Point know being that I am already DODMERB qualified. I also want to know if I can still accept a 3-year ROTC even if I am injured.

Thank you for your support. It does suck that my application is fully complete and then this happens, but we'll get through it.

You would need to contact DoDMERB and let them know you need to update your medical status.

It will be helpful to collect the medical records as you go. (ie, ask for the MRI report (not just the results the doctor gives you). And then any doctor's notes with the diagnosis, treatment, prognosis. Then email your DoDMERB contact and tell them you need to update your status as you've sustained an injury. They will tell you what you need to submit and how to go about doing that. After you get the DoDMERB process rolling again, it wouldn't hurt to let your WP admissions rep know.

I have no inside knowledge regarding the ROTC question, but I would venture to guess that it is like most medical remedials and varies case by case.

Best wishes for good news and quick healing!

Yea, you are required to upstate DODMERB with any change to your medical history. This qualifies, whether a sprain or tear. Sprains/injuries are asked about on the medical history form.

Don’t panic. Work through the process. It’s there for a reason. Hang in there!

As a couple of others have said, WAIT till you know a definitive diagnosis before contacting DODMERB or the Academy. Right now you know neither the diagnosis or have a suggested course of treatment. Wait till you know for sure, then contact DODMERB. Once you pull that pin you have thrown the grenade in DODMERB’s direction and it will begin a records review of your injury and prognosis. There is plenty of time! Let’s hope that physical therapy and conservative treatments are all that are needed and you will fully recover by R-Day! Since DODMERB also controls ROTC medical qualification, I believe you will have to recover before you can qualify for scholarship receipt but there is a longer period to get through that process. Again, let’s hope for the best till you get your MRI. Good luck with your recovery.

If you are close with your Field Force rep, I would contact them ASAP about how to proceed. My DS's FF told him to 1) don't get hurt, 2) if you do get hurt let him know right away and they would determine the best course of action.

You will definitely need to report it to DoDMERB regardless.

There is no need to rush. Listen to others who have stated to get your full diagnosis and prospective recovery time. If it something that won’t be better by R Day, tell DODMERB & your admissions officer. But wait until you know. Often they will defer you for a year
