Post-Appointment Class of 2027 Hangout: PTR, I-Day, What To Bring, Leave Periods…all that endless new stuff

What do you use for ID now? Mom and Dad will not be around to help you once you arrive at USNA. They will issue you a military ID but there are times when you might not want to use that. Maybe your state or locality offers a non-driving ID that you can obtain before you move out on your own at the end of June.
To clarify, I just turned 17 and was not able to get a legal permit through my school because I took the permit test too young while in high school. I took the written test at the beginning of the year and then did the mandatory 6 hours of driving and was not able to apply to take the road test until September of this year. When I was notified of this, I tried to make an appointment to just get an ID and that's when I was told no appointments until August.

Our state has alternative locations to get both a state ID and driver license. Possibly yours does as well? 3rd party authorized locations? I know my sister did her title and license stuff at a AAA office in CA.

In NY - you can contact various counties to schedule a driving test. Both of my kids secured them outside our county because our county is backlogged all the time.

I'm not sure (obviously) how the local/state government works in your state but where I live now and in states where I have lived, they will sometimes make special allowance for situations like yours. You won't get that to happen yourself, you could potentially reach out to your state rep's office for assistance. Generally, they have people there just for constituent service and you're a constituent who needs their help breaking through the line for a very good reason. You don't need to be politically connected or a donor, just be polite and state your case with a clear
"ask" that they can attempt to give you.

That’s crazy. I would contact your MOC who gave you a nomination and I’m sure they would be more than willing to make a few calls to get you in soon. I know it’s a state issue and not a federal one.

Can you get a passport card? You can hold both a passport book and a passport card. The passport card comes in handy sometimes. It is the size of a driver's license and good for both domestic flying and USNA. Good for Canada and Mexico too, I think. I got it in case I lost or mutilated my passport book - a passport card is evidence of US citizenship - no need to dig around for a birth certificate. And maybe you can get a passport card expedited.

I went through a driving school. After you get your permit you must wait 6 months before being able to get a driver's license.

I just got my passport two weeks ago/same day. It cost 250 and I am not sure if I could go and do that again for a passport card. I will try and see if I can get one non-expedited and hope for the best. Thank you for your suggestion.

You might not be able to get the driving test moved up but I'm pretty confident that the non-driving ID can be
moved if the right person advocated for you.

I will try. Thank you!
If you have 4 hours to spare I would simply go down there with your passport, birth certificate, etc. Explain situation and ask for State ID Card (non-driver's license). May have to wait a bit but would be surprised if you don't eventually walk out with an official identification card. Take a book and rembember to smile, please and thank you.

That is the option I would tell my child if she needed a govt ID. Hard to carry one's passport around and dangerous, too. DMVs are set up for such IDs, esp for people who can no longer drive or have disabilities.

Will we get a separate document via email with all of the paperwork it mentions?

Thanks

Yes, you will get an email with your actual PTR and I'm assuming other information. All the documents including the checklist are linked on that page, so you can go ahead and get started.

Quick question, my DD accepted her appointment on 4/15 but we still haven't received the BFE. Does anyone know when it normally arrives? Thanks!

Don't worry too much about it. From what I've read previously and my own BFE it's about two weeks, so hopefully soon.

Thanks for posting that the PTR is out. I have to chuckle.

After my daughter accepted her appointment in December, I posted to the forum asking if there were more forms to fill out. Some experienced forum members gently noted that "Yes, there will be some more forms to fill out."
