Post-Appointment Class of 2027 Hangout: PTR, I-Day, What To Bring, Leave Periods…all that endless new stuff

On the PTR link it says the COVID-19 form is optional, but on the checklist it does not say its optional. We are still not able to open the form, not sure if its because everything we own is Apple or not. Does anyone know if the form is mandatory?

DD is working through the PTR. I wanted to advisor her on the life insurance - SGLI . My thinking is that she doesn't need the default $500k policy at this time in her life (no spouse, no dependants). Can they change this election later in their midshipmen/naval career? IT also says ... "Traumatic Injury Protection (TSGLI) coverage is automatic with SGLI coverage" What is TSGLI and should she be more concerned with this than a policy payable on death?

I think she can take a lesser amount of SGLI. Read all fine print or call Admissions. If she takes the USAA or NFCU career starter loan loan down the road, and the unthinkable happened, that policy would pay off that debt, as well as any other debt, with leftover perhaps shared among siblings for their savings. SGLI has no military duty or combat exclusion clauses, as most “civilian” life insurance policies do. No matter what you are doing, your designated NOK gets it. I always recommend taking a lesser amount now, increase as needed later on.

If you have any amount of SGLI, I think you get TSGLI - but check everything I am saying, it’s been awhile since I’ve dealt with it.

Some of our sponsor mids have gotten the full amount, saying, “I’d probably be the highest earner in the family, helping to support parents in later life and siblings with down payments or stuff for their kids. If I am not there to help, I’ve set up my SGLI to go to them.” Brought a tear to my eye.

they actually re-fill this out each year. mine called me this year (youngster) and she said do you remember what I chose last year - I said let me look on the paperwork, since I kept a copy everything - she did the max - it is so cheap and we just decided, you never know what will happen.

No reason NOT to do the max. It is not a big debit monthly, and in the unlikely event something happens, it will cover everything and then some for the beneficiaries that may be left over from the servicemen's debts (in most cases).

DD received her PTR letter today with a reporting time of 0915 on 6/29! Her response? Three less hours of getting yelled at On I Day!
That fun starts after induction when the doors close. They certainly aren’t friendly during the day (my son told me after induction he might have made a mistake - they were mean to him that day).

Fast forward four years later - last night he told me he had a lot of fun at USNA, especially 1C year.

DD has a 0845 hours report time .
Navy people say “0845” and don’t add “hours.” Some other services do that. I’d be interested if the PTR says that - military customs and usage evolve over time.

Does anyone know the protocol from bringing braces retainers?

I have one that I am supposed to wear nightly. Will there be any difficulty keeping it with me on I-Day?

Bring it. Label it and put it in a ziploc and label that. They should give you time to get it. If they don’t, you can ask for it. Their job is to push you and train you. But it’s also their job to ensure you remain healthy and take care of you.

Does the permanent retainer (wire that fitted to the bottom teeth) need to come out before reporting on I-Day?

Talk to Admissions thru chat. In our case, DS retainer was removed two weeks prior to iday to avoid hiccups.
