The State Maritime Academies (SMAs) are great institutions and if a young person is applying to Kings Point, they should also apply to the SMAs. Most SMAs have reciprocal tuition programs with select states, ie (regional tuition or instate tuition).
Additionally, the Student Incentive Program (SIP) offers SMA cadets $8,000 a year for up to $32,000 total scholarship money to be used for tuition, uniforms, books, or subsistence for a three-year service obligation.
There are a number of shoreside positions for Marine Transportation graduates available from supply chain management, port captains, marine chartering, oil brokerage, stevedoring, port operations, marine ship repair, and logistics. These are just a sample of possible options.
SUNY Maritime College offers a five-year program to earn a master's degree in International Transportation Management and a third mate's license.
