Can someone elaborate on deck license jobs situation? I am clueless because I am in a different field entirely, but everything I am reading points to decreased # of jobs for deck officers, esp junior level, and high unemployment... I need to make sure my DS understands all pros and cons.

The sailing job market is hot.

I know of 2022 graduates that sailed out of the MMP union hall as third mates on Matson ships.
I also know 2022 graduates landing third mate jobs on tankers making $130k a year. Those individuals on tankers are moving up as soon as they get the next license.

Military Sealift Command (MSC) has open job announcements for third mates and second mates.

Shoreside opportunities are also very good.

There is also the option of extended active duty training (ADTs) as a Strategic Sealift Officer (SSO). There are a number of grads that do six-month to three-year ADTs.

Your son should be reaching out to graduates or their local alumni chapter with his questions or concerns.

Thank you for your response. Do you mind elaborating on what types of shoreside opportunities are avail? Also, what do you think about state Maritime academies vs KP? If one does not get into KP, are they worthwhile, in your opinion?

The State Maritime Academies (SMAs) are great institutions and if a young person is applying to Kings Point, they should also apply to the SMAs. Most SMAs have reciprocal tuition programs with select states, ie (regional tuition or instate tuition).
Additionally, the Student Incentive Program (SIP) offers SMA cadets $8,000 a year for up to $32,000 total scholarship money to be used for tuition, uniforms, books, or subsistence for a three-year service obligation.

There are a number of shoreside positions for Marine Transportation graduates available from supply chain management, port captains, marine chartering, oil brokerage, stevedoring, port operations, marine ship repair, and logistics. These are just a sample of possible options.

SUNY Maritime College offers a five-year program to earn a master's degree in International Transportation Management and a third mate's license.

The MEBA hall has many openings for engineers. There is never a want for shipboard engineers. The shoreside market for engineers is also very strong.
