My DS has a back injury that occurred plebe year. He is now a 2/C and will soon have his physical. I try not to bring it up with him, but I'm concerned that it will keep him from commissioning. He missed one PRT (plebe year) as a result of injury. Since then he has passed them all - mostly A grades I think.
Had a few appts at Walter Reed and a surgical consult (no surgery). He is doing pretty good now, but his flexibility is poor. Is there a place where I can read about which injuries will keep him from commissioning or from certain service selections? Is restricted line an option? I think he would like to select aviation, but knows he will probably be disqualified. I'm just looking for info without adding to his stress level. Thanks.

Pre-comms exist as a baseline suitability physical for commissioning, Your son will be evaluated to see if he has anything that will/might prevent him from commissioning or going unrestricted line. On top of that, communities such as aviation and submarines will look at a person to see if they need waivers or have any medical showstoppers. The biggest disqualifier is usually anthro measurements for aviation. I don't know the extent of your DS's injury, but the fact that he is still physically able (PRT scores) is positive. Also, usually, pre-comms don't result in immediate disqualification. If a waiver is possible, they'll work to get one. I had asthma on my record and I got a waiver for pilot. Usually, pre-comms are the catalyst for waivers and other necessary procedures. My vision was too poor for pilot, but I got scheduled for PRK as a result of my pre-comms appointment and I now see 20/20. Also, FWIW, my roommate had four shoulder surgeries injuries at school and he is going pilot. Best of luck to your DS!
