Hello,

I accepted an appointment to USNA. I have short length hair that I comb daily. I was tentatively planning on getting a buzz cut in the spring. Now that the weather is warming up and I will be spending more time outside running, I thought I may do this. But I have heard some people advise on not coming with a "buzz' length haircut. Is this true? Any advice is appreciated.

There are plenty who do. They will still buzz it anyway to make sure everyone is the same (males, that is).

I'd go with a skin fade to adjust to having a military-style haircut. Save looking like a thumb for the real deal. You'll have over six weeks to get comfortable with having a shaved head! You will get buzzed regardless of what your hair looks like.

I cut my son's hair just like they do for Plebe Summer about 3 weeks before I-Day. He was glad he had three weeks to get his scalp used to the sun.
One less thing to think about was his reason for doing it.

I met a gal on I-Day who had done the same thing. I thought she looked great, too. That was certainly a power move, in my opinion.

My mid buzzed his hair before he went to get used to the sun. His plan worked but he's always kinda felt like he lost out on a rite of passage. To each their own.

My son had a pretty major mullet along with the entire men's varsity lacrosse team. After his BGO interview, his BGO told him to cut his hair prior to doing any nomination interviews. So he did.

It is alllllmost back. A shadow of its former self. Probably will be back in force right before NSI starts or I-Day. 😅

Question.
While in BT do the men get trims around the neck line and around the ears?
I know some men who do not trim the neck line area looks awful.

Thanks.

You mean during Plebe Summer? The answer is yes and there will be frequent haircuts for males throughout the four years at USNA

They are "free" in the sense that you have allocated money from your pay that covers those sorts of things. Mids can take advantage of haircuts as needed.

Just be a good person and tip accordingly (that is not included).

That is a shocker to me personally. That was never a thing when I was a mid. They were all on salary at the time and not paid by the head so to speak.

I didn't tip for haircuts aboard ship either. . .

If you ever sat down in Mr. Larkin's chair in the 8th Wing shop, you figured out pretty quickly that the barbers weren't paid by the head. They were all "double dippers" in 8th Wing - retired Army barbers from the Baltimore area.
