Can anyone give me insight as to what it means to be a preferred walk on for a team at USNA. Son did an official visit- not blue chipped- told he is a preferred walk on- he has completed application and has had interview with moc.
Curious of time frame for status and just what difference if any it makes in the application process.
Wants to study Political Science and look to Aviation.

It shouldn't make any difference in the application process itself as that's the same for all applicants. I'm sure the more popular sports, like football, have a fair number of blue-chips they can work with. I doubt that wrestling has much in that way. I'm sure this is their way of saying they would like your son to come out for the team but they aren't going to be taking special steps to help get him admitted. All just my surmise though.

At NASS they have a chance to meet with coaches from various teams. There were a ton a kids at the wrestling meeting, and the message DS walked away with was they don't take many, if any, walk ons. But good luck and kudos to your son if they are looking at him; they have a great team! I have no clue what preferred walk on means, but would be very interested in knowing as well.

Should your DS be offered an appointment and accept, there will be walk-on opportunities during Plebe Summer, and he will be a known name to the coaches.

I would be interested in knowing his high school accomplishments. I suspect he is pretty good.

One of DS’s friends wrestled in states and he wouldn’t try out because he isn’t good enough.

Congrats. Keep us posted.

I think if your DS is committed to go USNA, it’s mission and okay with or without wrestling then he is applying to the right place. This is just my opinion... And guessing you know most of this already.

You know Navy is a great program that has a reputation of turning out great officers. It’s a deep program. And your DS knows how tough a sport it is. A preferred walk on is good. A few thoughts on where it could take him... he gets there and is competitive, all great. He gets to travel, do a sport he loves. He gets there and realizes it’s a ton of work to put in especially if he is far back in the depth chart and rarely gets to wrestle in a meet. Many athletes realize they just want to do something raked or focus on school. This is not uncommon at a SA. All of the above are fine options and one of the great parts about being an athlete at USNA.

As far as it helping... the coaches were in honest where he stands. It will help a little in the process. Probably not enough to make a major impact. Like an any candidate, he will probably hear in Jan-Mar or as late as April.
