I am currently in the beginning stage of the application process and I have a question about the preliminary application.

I took the SAT for the first time in June without studying and I scored a 1810 (570 M/590 R/650 W). I will retake it in October and actually study this time. Should I wait until October to submit my preliminary application or should I submit my application now with my lower scores?

How are your grades? If you have at least a high 3.xx than I would suggest you submit the preliminary now. The prelim is used as a first cut on who will become an 'official' candidate. Assuming you have a strong list of Extra Curricular Activities and strong GPA than you should clear the first hurdle to become an official candidate. You can retake the SAT (and I suggest you also take the ACT) before you submit your final application.

Good luck!

Thank you for replying. I have a 3.82 unweighted GPA and 74/596 class rank. My main concern is that my math and reading scores are not competitive enough.

Submit it now -- let USNA determine whether you will be designated as an official candidate. Worst case scenario is you have to score higher on SAT/ACT.
