Hello all, I am very new to this forum; I have rather recently received my acceptance into the academy prep school graduating 2010; is anyone else in my situation??

what am I to expect??
any tips from members of the corps??

I have been very active in my schools AFJROTC unit; will this help me?

thanks to all!!
Mark Richardson.

I haven't seen bluesuiter around in a while, but I do know he is active over on www.collegeconfidential.com

Many posters here do not post over there, obvious since they are about 20 appts. short of this site. However, they have threads over there regarding prep.

I also would suggest pming JAM since their DD went through prep last yr for the Army

i am a preppie class of 2008, any specific questions feel free to ask or private message :)

Scholarship

My son received the Falcon Foundation Scholarship!!! :thumb:

Congratulations!

The best advice I would give any incoming preppie is to have fun but to save at LEAST half of their pay. This is a very *interesting* place and at times you will feel like it is sucking your soul out and other times it is one of the best places in the world. Just keep your head up and remember your goal of getting to the academy.

PM me if you have any specific questions, but as said I don't frequent here very often.

My son also received a Falcon Foundation scholarship offer today. He had received the dreaded thin white envelope last week. He is now happy to have the opportunity use the scholarship and look at attending Northwest Prep.

Wait so are people getting into the prep school or whatever the falcon foundation scholarship AFTER getting their thin white envelop from USAFA?

lets not get the usafa prep school confused with the falcon foundation.

that is all ;)

usafa has a prep school on campus... it's the "USAFA Prep School." lol mateus went there last year and bluesuiter is there now

the academy also sends out falcon foundation scholarships... you can use them to go to one of a few military schools around the country, with NMMI and Marion being two of them. the academy prep school and other military prep schools arent related in any way

The biggest difference is that the USAFA prep is a full year, with enlisted pay, whereas the other schools to my knowledge are one semester with the expectation that you will do a second semester at a regular college. Both sides have their advantages/disadvantages such as that the USAFA prep is not an accredited college so you won't get credit for the classes after here if you don't go to the academy.

1. Enlisted pay should be really good, right? Is it more than cadet pay?
2. I don't think any prep school are accredited - all are at high school level.

1. Only for a few years. As a direct entry to the Prep School you can look to make a bit over $800, rated at 35% of an 0-1's paygrade, which I believe is technically the same as cadet pay. The difference is that for the first few years at the Academy you have to pay back a large loan and so your takehome money comes down to about $110 per month.

2. It is not high school level, it is junior college level. They just don't have a need to be accredited since you are required to start as a freshman anyway the following year.

the prep schools are NOT like high School...They are Jr Colleges...

and yes the pay is more then cadets (Cadets pay for 2009 is 929.00 (or right about that), CGAScholars earn E-2 pay, plus BAH, and BAS about 2400 a month)

I'll be attending the prep school as well next year :)
