I have applied to the Air Force Academy and am now a candidate. I have taken mostly Honors and AP courses. I have many leadership positions including section leader of drumline junior and senior year; student counsel representative; school club vice president; member of NHS and Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society. I have many extracurricular activities including band since 9th grade; Varsity cross country and varsity letter senior year; water polo senior year My statistics are as follows

GPA: 3.69 (66 of 516 or top 12%)
SAT Scores: Math 610 English 610
AP and Honors Courses:
English 3, English 4, Calculus BC, US History, Geometry, Algebra 2, English 1, English 2, Anatomy and Physiology, Pre Cal and Trigonometry.

Does anyone know whether I will have a chance at the USAFA Prep School if I don't make the academy because of my low GPA, Rank, and SAT scores? Thanks

Your GPA and SAT scores are not very low. At the same time they're probably not high enough at present to get you admitted, unless the rest of your resume carries you across the finish line. I expect you would be found to be academically qualified, which would rule out any shot at USAFA Prep School. JMPO. I do not sit on any boards, but that's how I see this one. I'd focus on improving the SAT scores or giving the ACT a shot.

Spolac,

First... congrats on your desire to serve as an officer in the armed forces.

The best advice anyone can give you is to apply and continue to improve wherever you can.

The admissions process is not 100% black and white. Amazing young people are chosen from the "whole candidate" perspective and the mix that the AF thinks will create the best crop of officers. That can include diversity factors, varied interests, and more.

What has surprised us the most, is just how eager AFA (and presumably the other SAs) are to embrace a wide variety of candidates and interests. For example...

One guy from our state had amazing grades/stats, EC's centered around theater/arts and not too much leadership. Conversely, our DS had just good grades/stats but lots of atheletics and leadership. Both of them are thriving at AFA; one is in Show Choir and will likely find the academics comparitively easy, and one is on the Combat Shooting Team but will fight for "Bs" if he's lucky. Both will make great officers someday.

Stick with it!

Okay, so I just recieved my most recent SAT scores and my math is now a 690. Does this knock my entire chance of the prep school out even though I have a below average GPA?

Like MedB said, admissions is not black and white. However, your SAT score is low enough that it would put you at the very top of prep school students if you did get a prep school offer, but it is pushing the limit.

typical prep school average gpa, act and sat scores

Lfry,

If you don't mind, what in your opinion is the typical prep school average gpa, act and sat scores?

I applied through the enlisted side. 640 Math SAT, 620 Writing and a 3.59 GPA.

I did have a year of community college under my belt as well. I was told that I was overqualified for the Prep School. Luckily, some one made a few calls and got me in.

I'm not sure if it was that year of community college or my SAT scores and GPA that made me overqualified. A talk with you admissions counselor might yield some information.
