Can someone give insight on how a candidate is notified of admissions to one of the USCGA prep school?

Officially, USCGA does not have their own prep school like the DoD schools. Instead, they leverage the CGAS - Coast Guard Academy Scholars program to send students to private military prep schools on scholarship. Students receive selection notification within their Bear's Den portal just like they would for an offer of appointment.

a good number of kids also attend NAPS as part of the CGAS program.

To answer your question notification is similar to notification of full appointments. Either a phone call from your AO or Coach or via notification on Bears Den. You can give a preference on which prep to attend at the moment they are Georgia Military College, Marion Military Institute or the Naval Academy Preparatory School. My son is currently at NAPS as part of CGAS.

My daughter is currently a scholar. She was informed of this decision last year by phone call from a coach. It was almost the last day of March,

My daughter applied EA and was notified by phone on 12/22 of her appointment to CGAS by her AO. Not a recruited athlete.
