Hi!

A nomination is not required to be considered for admission to the USAFA Prep School. Simply qualifying as a candidate "opens that door" for consideration.

And the private scholarship foundation, and I'm assuming you're speaking of "The Falcon Foundation" chooses their own candidates with the assistance of the admissions folks at USAFA. No nomination is required for this either.

BOTH are outstanding programs...there's not many slots, but if your son is selected, it's a great "deal!"

Steve,

Thanks for the reply, just to verify info, neither requires any additional paperwork, just the USAFA Application;correct? He would be thrilled to be appointed to either of the programs, we continue to hope!

As a parent of a Falcon Foundation prepster this year, to be considered no additional paperwork is required but as others have stated in the past you may want to make sure the ALO is aware your DS/DD is interested in either option. It has been a great experience for our DS. Now we wait as all of you do.

My son is a Falcon Foundation Scholar who attended NW Prep. It was an amazing program from which he continues to benefit from greatly.

My understanding is that the admissions committee selects the Falcon Scholars and Preppies. I was told that you can of fall between categories, not strong enough for the Academy but too strong for the Prep School. The alternative is to become a Falcon Scholar - again the admissions committee selects these candidates.

Another thing to keep in mind is that while your have a very good chance at gaining an admission after Prep school (As a Falcon Scholar or a preppie), it is not assured. I think it is about 80% for Preppies, not sure for Falcon Scholars. Much better than someone "off the street" but it is not a given.

Hope this info is helpful.

WKSLP: As others have stated this is a "Good Deal!" Not only are the appointment rates high (at NMMI it was 100% for the 10 attending our school last year), the Falcon Foundation provides a generous scholarship.

As for "additional paperwork"; you need to respond if you get an invitation. A candidate/Prep still has to do the normal paperwork (including the nomination process) as if he/she did the previous year. The CFA has to be retaken etc. The only thing that is not required is a DoDMERB physical. Only a "Statement of Present Health" form is turned in.

Data from the Falcon Foundation proves that their Preps excel at the USAFA.

If you get this opportunity please don't pass it by.

I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with Major Hanak!!!

I was the benificiary of this a LOOOONG time ago (Carter was POTUS) but...it was THE key to my gaining admission!

I went, with letters of rejection from EVERY SA, and a 4 year ROTC scholarship with a "Pilot Slot" attached...to give it one more try. There were 57 of us at Northwestern Prep in 1978-1979.

At the end...if my memory is correct, 52 or 53 of us received appointments to the SA of our choice; some of us received multiples (I received USAFA/USNA/USMA).

If offered this chance, TAKE IT! It will only help, regardless of the eventual outcome.

IMHO.

Hi! I'm a Falcon Foundation scholar from NWP--I applied last year to the class of 2014 and got my scholarship--I'd just like to say that it has been a fantastic experience, and has improved me in all aspects. The program was successful for me, as well--I got my appointment to 2015 yesterday!

My DS who also was a Falcon Scholar at NWPrep this past fall just received the call from our Congressman today! This is a graet experience if you are offered the opportunity.

Just a little update...

Its my understanding that NOW if you're on a Falcon Foundation scholarship for USAFA, you do NOT apply to anyone BUT USAFA.

Once upon a time...it was different.

My Falcon Foundation scholar son went to NWP this fall with Karek's son and DJSanguine. He also received the calls/appointment to the class of 2015!

I went to NWP on a falcon scholarship this last fall as well. It was an awesome experience and I received my appointment yesterday! I suggest if offered this chance take it! Good times at NWP and ready to attend USAFA class of 2015. Also as a Falcon Scholar, you don't have to redo the essays or evaluations or have an ALO interview.

As mentioned earlier by an ALO, you can't apply to multiple academies if you are under a scholarship. Doing so can void your scholarship. I'm another NWPer who just got accepted 2 days ago!
