Preparing for Plebe Summer

@ Vista

Thank you , Thank you, Thank you! I was wondering what would happen on I Day . All of my friends keep telling me I will be a complete mess... and I tend to believe them. I really appreciate all of your insight! :thumb:

I-day rule #1 for Mom's and Dad's:

No crying until you're in the car on the way home.

Also: bring water to the Court for your plebe to drink after swearing in. My (now 1/C - ) didn't want to eat anything but she was very thirsty finishing off two bottles and that which had melted in the bag of ice in the cooler.

We brought sandwiches and drinks in a cooler with a throw away picnic table cover to Stribling (no grass stains on white works). They might not eat during mid meal because they will be to nervous but might be hungry while meeting you. Only younger siblings are allowed to cry until you are in the car, then it's Katy Bar The Door. Did take my Daughter and Son to range for practice with AR-15 and 9MM. Helped them a little with the familiarity with a live weapon. Run is better advice. Daughter said she had Hockey Coaches that screamed louder but she was exhausted.

DS has yet to hear a yes or no from the academy, but IF he gets to go this summer, he wants to go to I-day alone. Can any of you comment on that approach?

He is alone on Iday. You walk with him to the building and then see him 45 minutes later that day. That is it.

We took care of some business the day before. Ie setting up bank account. Making sure sports gear was situated etc.

There will be people there alone.

What bank do the Midshipmen use?

My mid banks at the Navy federal credit union (office next to midstore). checks are direct deposit.
I dont recall if there are other/better options--I am the wrong resource on this topic.

Thanks for the info. My DS said he was anxious to open an account but I said to wait and open one where all the other Mids have accounts.

You'll get paperwork from Navy Federal in your permit to report packet. USAA is also an excellent choice; mid has accounts at both.

Well, now that the PRP is out, is the Navy Federal the best option?

Yes, NFCU is the best option. They have branches at every possible duty station. It's nice to be able to walk into your bank no matter where you are stationed.

This is the way I was leaning for my DS. USAA is an option but I agree, it's nice to be able to walk into your bank.

USAA is a great insurance option. With as much as newly commissioned officers move around, USAA will be the cheapest car insurance in almost every duty station. Also, nothing needs to be done when you move to a new duty station other than letting USAA know. House insurance is another discussion - USAA is not the cheapest route in some locations. USAA customer service is probably the best in the insurance industry.

I have USAA for my insurances but not for banking. I agree with everything you have said. Thanks.

We use USAA for banking and it is wonderful!

They have a great app and you can do mobile deposits, etc.

When we added our daughter to our auto insurance we assumed USAA would be the best price - surprisingly they weren't - AAA was, hands down.
