Since getting a presidential nom is unlimited. is getting one like a regular nomination from a congressman, and then competing for senator
so like 30 apply for 1 spot for senator
but instead of presidential its 500 competing for 100 spots?

would 500 be an approx number of ppl that apply for pres noms?
also, on the academy website it says roughly 10,000 apply; 3,000 get noms.. since presidentials are unlimited. are the ppl with pres noms one of the 3,000?

A nomination, is a nomination is a nomination.

I've not seen any data on how many apply for Presidential Noms. Overall apps are historically 1.75 - 2 times the number of noms.

Ahhh, yes, those with Presidential noms are counted as part of those who get noms.

Many more candidates get Pres noms then there are Pres appointment slots. I believe the number of noms is in the low thousands, but I may be mistaken. A nom is a nom but you should NEVER rely on the fact you have a Pres nom. Always, always, always apply for every single nom for which you are eligible (unless you are a son/daughter of a Medal of Honor winner, which 99.9999% of you are not).

Candidate who receive only a Presidential nom will not be competing in the National Pool. This is only for those who receive an alternate Congressional nomination.

Fortunately, many with Presidential noms also have MOC nominations. But some MOC's refuse to nominate one with a Presidential. If 200 fully qualified candidates receive only Presidential nominations only the top 100 would receive an appointment.
The rest would receive a rejection.

I have watched my son's journey - while he is eligble for a pres nom and is so stated on his page, he did not receive any of the moc's - those that did send him a letter stated that "they are in contact with usna and know who has received an appointment or already have another nomination source. In serving as many virginians as possible, he only considers candidates that don't have any." My son was nevertheless dissappointed. My son's BGO continues to tell him he only needs one nomination. Others may be in this position - states that have 380+ applicants to senators and 50+ to congressman.

When our DS applied, we came from a state that is not as comp. as VA, NY or CA. Every applicant could recieve all 4 noms. We know of a child that did not receive any nom except Pres. He is now a 4 dig at the AFA...the old saying you only need one nom is very true, the source really doesn't matter, the WCS will be the most important thing for any candidate with a nom.

As USNA1985 stated, many more candidates are awarded presidential noms than will be allowed to use them. We were confused about this issue as well. Our son sought out other nom sources, just in case. Turns out, he did not get in on his presidential nom. I think having more than one nominating source just gives the Academy a little room to juggle things around. If they want you badly enough, they will find a nominating source for you! I am not even positively sure what nominating source was used for my daughter... and now, I guess it doesn't really matter.

Funny how it works, because in Washington the Senators and Congressmen communicate so that no one gets multiple nominations..
