Hello,

I would just like to know DS is on the right track with his process...

My DS received his Presidential nomination status for both the USAFA and USNA. It is my understanding he should still try to receive nominations from his two Senators, Congressman, and VP. All those applications have already been submitted and he is starting to have the actual interviews.

He wants appointments to both USAFA and USNA. So, completing the process with senators and congressman will give him better opportunity to receive two appointments, correct?

He received his LOA for USNA on 11/1.
And is blue chipped athlete for USAFA but hasn't received LOA as of yet.
He just returned from official visits with both academies.
Everything on application is completed except for CFA (which will be completed over Thanksgiving break).

MOC Interview Advice

Any advice for MOC interviews?

Questions asked?
Attire?
Should I bring anything (resume, LOA?)

First, welcome to the Service Academy Forums.

Second, it sounds as though your DS is on the right track regarding his nominations as he has applied to all nominating sources that he is qualified (Pres, VP, all 3 MOC's).

Third, congrats on the USNA LOA. An appointment should be coming if he is fully qualified since he has already received a Presidential nom.

Fourth, if he completes his USAFA app over the break then he may not receive a LOA from USAFA as they are stingy with LOAs in general and I do not believe they award them to candidates with completed applications and a nomination.

Fifth, the MOC interview should be considered the most important job interview of DS's life. Search around on the SAF for posts on this. There are many posts. But good night's sleep, nice suit/sports coat, haircut, ready to explain why he wants to attend USAFA and USNA as well as not attend USMA, and be confident and truthful. You don't need to bring anything or even be present. This has to be all him.

Thank you Blackbird!

Interesting to know about the USAFA. He had planned on submitting early action but with his school activities, college visits and government shut down there was no possible way for him to complete his CFA in time. Coach told him just to complete asap and wouldn't hurt him.

Do you know when USAFA starts the appointment process? Or is it basically on going?

This year appears to be different than past years due the introduction of Early Action. In the past, the bulk of appointments occurred in early March. Early appointments and/or LOAs were mostly confined to recruited athletes and "walk on water" amazing candidates. I don't understand how the early action works since most MOCs won't submit their slate of nominations until January and MOC nominations are required for many of the appointments.

Hopefully your DS will receive both appointments and have to choose where he will invest his time. As a parent keep in mind that getting the appointment is the easy part. Getting through an Academy is much more challenging. Quite a roller coaster for all involved. Enjoy the last year with him at home.

Totally understand... My dad was a graduate '55 and we know many folks who have attended academies and have served... Husband is retired signal officer.

It's all just so different when it's your child! He's applying to several college and will, hopefully, have a nice time deciding what is best for him.

I am just trying to keep up with logistics- ha.

Thanks!!

Oh, he just got a call and now has MOC nomination for USAFA. :)
