Background info:

So I took a look at my medical records and on July 2019, I went to my first appointment concerning back pain from prolonged sitting/standing. They did an x ray on me and found a ~12 degree curve in my lumbar around the same area I was experiencing pain from sitting/standing. May 2020, I went in for another appointment concerning back pain in the same area, but instead of feeling pain from sitting/standing, it was from lower back movements. So on my record, I have an entry for going to an appointment for chronic back pain in the lumbar area, the same place as my scoliosis (It doesn't explicitly say it is caused by scoliosis, just that it is in the same area). Now, this is the time where my wrestling practices stopped and I stopped heavy weight lifting/wrestling. After this, I no longer felt pain in my back and believe it was just caused by weight lifting (I did a lot of dead lifts). I believe my back pain was caused by weight lifting and wrestling, and it was just a coincidence that it happened to be in the same spot as my scoliosis since I no longer feel any pain down there. It also does not mention anywhere on my record that the back pain stopped, just that the last appointment for it was in May of this year.

My concern is that this will be brought up in my DoDMERB and/or MEPS exam along with my flight physical later in life (fingers crossed I get a slot). I understand that a maximum of 20 degrees of lumbar curvature is allowed to be a pilot so I am good there, but I am afraid that my past pain will be correlated with my scoliosis and I will be denied entrance into the military. What should I do? I am a Junior in high school and am seeing a chiropractor to do some correction exercises to reduce my curve, so I'm not sure if that will also be a problem. Would it be possible to explain to them that my back pain is gone without it being on my record?

Sorry, if that was confusing. Lot's of information and multiple questions at once. I would be very grateful for any response.

Waaaay too long for review on this public form: Send me an email: lawrence.e.mullen.civ@mail.mil; provide complete name and last 4; paste your post above to your email. I can assist better from there. :zip:

I don't think he can help without the last 4, otherwise he wouldn't have asked you to provide such sensitive info.

Have already made contact. We're good in his specific case. Thx :rockon:

If you only knew......:sleep::shake::screwy:
But thanks!!!!

Just going to add my $0.02 from my perspective as a Certified Orthotist specializing in scoliosis bracing: Schroth physical therapy is what I would suggest. Bracing wouldn't be considered until over 20 degrees but if you can find a Schroth PT nearby, I would try it. It can help reduce the curve and pain.

Napk 1ns - Just to draw a legal distinction - No one from DoDMERB or the federal gvernment will EVER prescribe treatment, therapy, surgery, medication, or anything else regarding medical procedures to someone that is NOT already a member of the military. :wiggle:

4Wheeler is providing that perspective as what he/she states he/she is; being helpful to you; on a public forum

Thank you for the insight. I just made an appointment with a spine specialist for Thursday who will refer me to a schroth specialist
