Principal Nomination Question

My DS has a principal nomination and we knew him to be Q3. One academy, one app, And one interview. Done.

We were thrilled to receive a phone call last week from our Senator congratulating him on his appointment to the USAFA Class of 2020 and an appointment letter on his portal that same day!

It's unfortunate that the USNA apparently had to make an exception the the rule of Principal Nom Q3 = Appointment a few years ago....but I have not read anywhere in the forums from USAFA or USMA candidates that they weren't appointed with a Principal Nom if qualified.

Our MOC did use the terms "a Primary Nom "and " the Principal Nom" interchangeably...which can cause anxiety when hanging onto every word of the letter.

Relax, Your Principal Nom + Q3 will result in a letter of Appointment soon.

Congratulations!!

If you read a post by USNAbgo08 from last month he posts the statue that regulates principal noms and USNA... If your read the entire statue it does not guarantee an appointment at USNA. It seems that USNA honors principal noms in the large majority cases, but it is not a requirement by law. I will have to dig and find that post as it shows the difference between USNA and USMA/USAFA language.

No nomination is given more weight than another. The competition is on each individual slate where you appear as a nominee. Having multiple nominations helps in the same way that having multiple lottery tickets helps... just more chances to win a slate.

I respectfully disagree. As you know well, slates can be given a principal and/or subsequently ranked. There is a distinct difference between being a 3Q principal or #10 on a ranked slate. If the slate is wholly competitive (without principal or rankings), then yes, I agree with your statement.

Obviously I meant that in terms of one slate vs another. A principal nom on a MOC slate is obviously the best nom on THAT slate.
