My son recently received a Principal Nomination to USNA. He is already medically qualified with a 4.4 GPA and 34 ACT. CFA scores came out to average those of past appointed candidates. Any idea on how long it might take the Academy to send a final verdict? Thanks

Hate to tell you....

It could be a day...a week...a month...or ?

It's dependent upon several factors: when did the MOC send in the selection to USNA? Upon receiving the selection from the MOC, what is USNA's timeframe for acting upon it and what do they do in their review of all the particulars? And then...how quickly do they send out the official "offer of appointment?"

But you know what? It really doesn't matter because you KNOW it's coming!!!

Congratulations to you son!!!! :thumb:

Thanks so much! We've been pretty excited around here. USNA has been his dream since 4th grade and he has worked so hard over the years. So happy for him that it has paid off.

DS received principal Nom mid December, received a nottification from MOC mid-January that appointment was on its way. A few days later BFE arrived. Congratulations. Just be prepared the stress does not go away with getting in! Now they have to stay healthy, and negotiate plebe summer, plebe year, etc! It is a wild ride, even for parents.

Congrats to your family, ctkttw.

Not an answer per se, but wanted to let you know that last year some kind-hearted admissions folks at USAFA actually set the candidate portals to update on 12/25 early AM for fully qualified principal nominees.

A few candidates woke up to a new Xmas morning surprise. Maybe your family will too? But in any case, it's coming so hang in there! :thumb:

How do you know if you got a principal nomination or just regular? I got my congressional nom this morning...it just showed up on the USAFA admissions portal. No phone call or e-mail so far. Would it say in the portal whether or not you are a principal nominee, or is that something you get in a call or e-mail? Do you think they will contact me in other way regarding the nomination, or is it only on your portal?

My son received a letter from our Senator naming him as the Principal Nominee. It has not shown up on his USNA candidate information page yet. The Senator told him that he would most likely get a phone call from his office informing him of his (hopefully impending) appointment before it showed up on his USNA page. Sounds like USAFA & your MOC do it a little differently.

Communication to Nominees is dependent on the MOC. MOCs could notify their Nominees by letter, email, and/or call or not at all. DS received letters notifying him of his nominations. If a nomination is received but the type of nomination is unclear, I would recommend that the Nominee simply call the MOCs office and ask.

Thanks! Would you recommend waiting a week or so, in case they did send a letter?

I would recommend waiting at least a week for the notification. Even though the wait maybe difficult for you. Keep in mind this is a marathon not a spirit. DS is a 2016er at USAFA who received multiple nominations his first time but no appointment. He did receive a Falcon scholarship and attended a prep school and then received a nomination the next year followed by an appointment. My point is try to take the long view. This process is long for many but so worth it for the right candidates.

Also once you receive conformation of your nomination, take a few minutes and send your MOC a thank you note. Remember that you want to stand out from the crowd. And well done on receiving your nomination!

Thank you for the advice! I am hoping that with a nomination they will at least try do something for me like prep school if I am not appointed. Honestly, I don't care care how or even when I get in, just THAT I get in. It is a very long road. It already feels this way, and technically, it hasn't even started for me!
