Hi There,

I know 4/c get Macbooks, but son is wanting to pick his monitor and printer out for me to send later. Are there any specs he should follow in choosing these, and what's the deal with subwoofers ? -officer

It may be easier for you to just purchase him a gift card to the store of his choice and let him pick them up sometime when he's out and about on Sunday liberty.
There are also monitors and printers sold at the bookstore and base exchange.

Most parents seem to shop the New London Best Buy during Parent's Weekend to pick up those items. I believe 23" monitors are the maximum.

As for a subwoofer, he'll have no need for that as a 4/c - get him a set of headphones as that's the only way he'll be listening to music.

Our son bought his printer at the bookstore. We ordered a monitor for him at Christmas and had it shipped to Chase Hall in Jan. He managed to survive without the monitor until then.

computer stuff

I am not a Mac user so this may not apply to Macs, but for Christmas of her 4th class year, we purchased a dock for our cadets Dell Laptop so that she didn't have to connect/disconnect all her accessories every time she took her laptop somewhere. It also enabled her to have a full size keyboard, monitor, etc..permanently set up in her room

We ordered printer at end of swab summer so she had it for beginning of 4/C year... we did not order a monitor for her at beginning of school - saved that for a 4/C Christmas present. Only so many 'gift' ideas for cadets so save some things for later....

other gift ideas 'ideas' -
-external hard drive (of course maybe the macs are more reliable than the PC's 2012 had!)
- mattress topper
- gift cards for area businesses
and of course the deliveries by local Parents Association Chapter (snacks & sundries) and Cadet Cakes throughout the year!

There is a size limit of 24 inches for a computer monitor. That would be the only limitation (I have no idea what macs are limited to with monitors etc...... I still have ((and will hopefully remain so)) windows.)

I would suggest, however, that a small flat screen tv with a computer input or a computer monitor with YWR inputs. I got a computer monitor with just computer input, and it was annoying when I realized that I couldn't hook any type of game console to it.

There is nothing in regulations about type of printers. Although I would suggest the academy bookstore printers, as you can later white card ink for it at the bookstore. Just make sure its compatible with the mac.

There are also company printers, so in theory you don't really need a printer, but most of them have been OOC a lot. (out of commission)

As for sub-woofer, I have one myself. I don't think that there is a limit to the size, but use reason. Keep in mind, 4/c will not be allowed to have speakers or play anything out loud till they are granted the privilege to do so, which is usually a few weeks before the end of 4/c year. A good pair of headphones might be of more use until then.

Some other good gift ideas:

-Small set of eating utensils; plate, fork, knife, spoon, cup (for those midnight snacks in your room or that takeout you got for that long night ahead).
-A good alarm clock, don't want to be late for formation after those long nights.
-A small personal fan. It gets hot in the barracks now and then.
-Non-tube white socks. The only time you will need tube socks is swab summer. Then you can have normal white ankle socks..... although I still have a pair or two from mine.....

And most like of all:
Homemade treats and letters (or just emails) from home. Sometimes you will have crappy days, and nothing makes you feel better than mom's chocolate chip cookies or that little letter saying "hi."

Is it for sure that they will be issued Macbooks?
