Out of Curiosity, while I have heard of prior Soldiers and Airman at Annapolis, have any Coast Guardsman actually attended the Naval Academy, and is that feasible in today's day and age.

To my knowledge there are no prior Coast Guardsmen currently at the Naval Academy. However, I think it would be feasible.

A little different situation, but I do know a current midshipman who is trying to cross-commission into the Coast Guard upon graduation.

@Temple17 how does that cross commissioning work? It’s something I’ve heard of but not necessarily know anything about

Honestly, I don't know many details because it happens so rarely. I am a 2/C at the academy and no one has cross-commissioned since I have been here.

There is a current 1/C who participated in the service academy exchange for a semester at USAF, and prefers the AF over the Navy, and is attempting to cross-commission into the AF.

Historically, these cross-commissionings have often involved swapping places with a someone at another academy. For instance, Cadet X commissions into the Navy & MIDN Y commissions into the Army.

There is also a new program, where cadet/mid victims of sexual assault are able to switch academies in the middle of their studies. Someone has recently benefited from this policy.

Oh wow. Thanks for this information. I’m trying to decide if I want to join my brother at usna or go to a different academy and am looking at all my options. Best of luck on the rest of the semester and I hope you get liberty soon!

Don't count on cross commissioning. It occurs, but is rare -- there is usually some good cause reason like family legacy. In addition, I believe it has to be a one for one swap with the other service so there is no net loss to either service. If you are unsure of what service you want to be in, US Merchant Marine Academy allows you to commission in any branch,

With respect to the original question, it is probably possible for a prior enlisted Coast Guardsman to attend USNA. USCG would have to release the enlistment contract. (As I think about it, I had a NAPS classmate who came in as Coast Guard Napster, but attended USNA. Not sure how that worked).

DEFINITELY DO NOT count on cross-commissioning. I know someone who did it -- to the USA -- more than a decade ago. That mid was the only person from the class who cross-commissioned and didn't get approval until April before graduation. Cross-commissioning today is very, very, very, very rare.

Reinforcing Old Navy's post!!

According to the USNA.edu website (the official source!), member of the armed forces other than USN / USMC can apply to USNA. I would suggest an interested candidate review the USNA website and also check with the person at USNA Admissions responsible for prior enlisted applicants as a starting point.
