Prior Drug use

Hey I have a question about prior drug use. I have read previous threads I understand that I'm going to be 100% truthful when applying to the scholarship. However my main question is will this prior drug use disallow me from certain paths in the Military? I'm deciding between the USMC and Navy as of right now mainly to become a fighter pilot(I know it's hard but I want to give it my all to obtain a slot), and was wondering if that was true how would that apply to what I previously stated? Is it out of the question I can get a pilot slot and eventually become a fighter pilot? If so that would play a major role in deciding which branch I would want to commission into.

Once you’re in, all paths for which you are qualified are open to you. Glad to hear you browsed other threads and came to the conclusion honesty is the best policy.

Since your main issue is deciding between Navy and Marines, focus your energy on a comparison analysis to include mission, culture, officer career paths other than aviation, just in case you don’t get aviation warfare. For example, people do get DQ’ed from naval aviation, but remain eligible for other career paths. Think about those so you are comfortable knowing if life throws you a curveball, there are other paths that appeal.

It’s not just vision. Other things can pop out at pre-comm physicals. There is also the additional medical evaluation done in Pensacola, the “NAMI whammy.” Do the preliminary thinking on what you could see yourself doing, just to be thorough. Chances are low, but it does happen.

"Prior drug use" has a spectrum from taking a puff of one joint to being addicted to narcotics.

This is the DoD standard applied by DoDMERB: " u. Any history of substance-related and addictive disorders (except using caffeine or tobacco).

Services, administratively, have their own standards.:wiggle:

+1 to Capt MJ, as always. It's important to do the research on the career paths now as you'll need to make a decision when applying. You can only apply as a Navy Option, or Marine Option, not both... but you probably are already aware of that fact.

I’m glad you expanded on this point, because I deliberately started my comment at the “once you’re in” stage.

Yea I know I can only choose one, I'm gonna have to think about it more for a little bit. I looked at some other Navy MOS and they seemed interesting, couldn't help but glaze over at the Navy SEALs lol. I think there's less I want to do in the Navy and I like the Marine Corps culture and mission more just from reading it. I want to still give Navy a chance however because they do have better fighters and I'm more open to the idea of becoming commissioned into the Navy.

I don't actually know if this is the case, but I expect the Navy to have a larger number of fighters than the Corps. That would be worth investigating. There's a lot of rotary craft in the Corps.
