Good evening. My candidate kit opened up, and as I was scrolling through it, there was a question asking about whether I have been put on probation/suspended/ or expelled for anything but academic reasons. Back in May I was put on probation for an incident, and I was worried this might affect my overall chances. Any thoughts? This is the only time something like this has happened... even then I'm quite worried about it.

Oftentimes, having gone through something and what you LEARNED from it is more important than the incident. Think about it: a candidate who has faced an incident, gone through it, and figured out choices/consequences is a known. Vs a candidate who has never been faced with an incident…no idea how they would perform/learn…is an unknown. Personally, all things equal, I would choose one that’s been challenged. Because they have learned about themselves. Grown. Can offer assistance/empathy to others as a leader. I speak that as a mom, too, who would rather have my own kiddos go through stuff, stumble fall, get back up, learn and go forward than not. And ESPECIALLY in the rather safe zone of home. Where the out come/consequences is more benign than as a legal adult…where consequences will potentially be more significant/impactful.

No one is looking for perfect. How you learn and grow is most important. And for your whole life. Own it and move forward. And good luck!

Some of the best essays and interview are with candidates that have overcome challenges. None of us are free from error or mistakes, not officers, Admissions reps., members of congress, Cadets, MIDN, etc. The stronger candidates explain what they have over come and how they have learned from taking responsibility for thier actions and experiences. Well done, this true story, can set a candidate apart from the many "perfect/outstanding" candidates. Do not be afraid of taking this incident and turning it into gold.
