When my DS started his journey I told him if he made it to be a MIDN I would fly an American Flag off yardarm in front of the house in his honor. Heck of a ride first his goal was USMA and then he got his COM nomination to KP instead, then he came up short at KP. He had a back up plan and never stopped working in that as well. He got his BFE yesterday for NROTC so we went to HOME Depot and he and I built his Yardarm! IMG_8406.JPG

I made some additions to the Yardarm in front of our house. I researched on line and think I have the proper order of flags. Stars and Stripes on the top position. Off one of the Arms I have a Navy Dept flag on top with Navy Jack next. Off other arm States in alphabetical order. We live in California and he will be attending school in New Mexico.
I am ordering a “Don’t Give Up The Ship” fall on Amazon, and looking for a Navy ROTC flag, and my DS wants a John Paul Jones Serapis flag as well.

If I am missing something or need to make a change to anything of if you have any tips for us Please comment, I want to make sure I am in regulation.

This is an awesome idea and I would like to get your instructions on how to do this. From what I see in the picture, you are in the San Diego area and I assume you attended the nomination ceremony with Scott Peters a few months back. I was there too and my DS went to Serra High School. He also got his nomination for KP but fell short but he kept his hopes up and ended up getting the NROTC scholarship for Norwich. From what I remember, the National Ensign is correct and personal flags start on the starboard side of the yardarm and go to port but I'm not 100% certain. You can do a google search for Navy Regulations Flags and Pennants for info. Good luck to your DS.

My wife rolled her eyes when we went to Home Depot and I had the plans in my head, but she loves looking out the kitchen window seeing it. I bought a one inch pvc pipe long enough to cut into pieces. The main pole is 4 feet high. We cut it into a three feet section and used the left over one foot section for the top of the Yardarm. To connect the arm we got a [emoji809] shaped pipe joint and took the one foot and three feet to create the mass. We cut two seven inch sections and added them to the [emoji809]for cross arms. We added three way pipe joints to the end of the cross arms for the rope off the cross arm. For the top I took the top off one of those 15 dollar aluminum flag kits that you can hang off the side of your house and used the eagle that is attached to the top section and the aluminum pole and inserted it in the top and to my surprise it fit like a champ.

We found small cleats in the to Rope and chain section of Home Depot and attached to the bottom of the main pole to run the flag up and down. They also have the clip to attached the flag to the rope. It took us maybe a hour and half to build and cost maybe 50 dollars total.

Yes we were there with you at Scott Peters ceremony at MCRD as well. Small small world. How is it going getting ready for the summer?
Maybe we should start are NROTC SD parents group?

He isn't required to attend NSI so he will chill out with his friends until end of July and be with me until he reports to Norwich. He only needs to be ready for football and his Rook week when he arrives in Vermont. I live in Georgia and he lives with his mother in SD.

Search NTP 13(B). Some old signalman shipmates referred me to this document. Hope it helps.

Excellent.
POW/MIA flag?

I am ordering one along with a “Don’t give up the ship”.

Question since I am a civilian and not familiar with regs

In what order would I fly the POW MIA flag? What rules do I need to observe to make sure I am paying proper respect.

Thanks

https://www.pow-miafamilies.org/protocol-for-the-powmia-flag-of-the-national-league-of-families.html

1. DISPLAYING THE POW/MIA FLAG AND THE UNITED STATES FLAG WITH OTHER FLAGS ON THE SAME FLAGSTAFF

When flying the POW/MIA flag on the same flagstaff as the United States flag, the POW/MIA flag should fly immediately below the United States flag. If the United States flag and a state flag and/or other flag or pennant will be flown along with the POW/MIA flag on the same flagstaff, the order from top to bottom should be: the United States flag, the POW/MIA flag, then the state flag or other flags, unless otherwise stipulated by your state flag code.
