I was looking into combat boots for USMA and my local army navy store sells AR 670-1 compliant Propper Series 100 8 Inch boots. Are these allowed at USMA? If not, what boots are authorized?

USMA will issue us the boots that we will ultimately end up using during CBT. I would be careful with your purchase of those boots because the Army is currently in a transition period from the old ACU colors/pattern to the new OCP. Both the old and new colors are still authorized now through January 2019. If you can provide a picture, I can let you know based on the color as to whether or not they'll be considered acceptable.

At the same time, it's doubtful you'll be able to use those boots right away. As said before, West Point will issue you authorized boots on or after R-Day. We'll all be wearing identical boots throughout CBT. Even if they are AR 670-1 compliant, they certainly won't allow them to be worn at least until we graduate CBT.

Hopefully someone will correct me, but doesn’t USMA issue a ‘boot letter’ in the spring of the admissions cycle that provides all the necessary details of this? I believe I recall seeing that the last few years and lots of discussion around it. Probably can do a search and find the old threads. I would wait until you get that letter, especially if regs are changing.

Yes.. You will get a "boot letter" telling you which boots are compliant this year. As soon as they do get yourself a pair and wear them a lot.. You wont regret it>

These are the boots I was looking into. My uncle has the same pair while serving but I’m unclear about USMA regulation when it comes to boots.

^^^^^^This!
Wait for the boot letter, then purchase an authorized pair from those options. Wear them at home to break them in before Beast. You will also get issued a pair at WP. AR670-1 compliant boots are not all acceptable for New Cadets!

As said buy and break in the boots specified on the boot letter before Beast. You will also be issued a pair upon arrival but they will not be broken in and you will training every day and going on long rucks. Foot problems tend to be a major issue and broken in boots mitigate that problem. There are usually a couple to choose from on the list. After you get through beast most of the cadets switch to the Nike boots for their comfort but you cannot show up to beast with boots that are not specified.

DD went with Belleville Khyber II. Lightweight, stable, warm weather boot. COMFORTABLE. Perfect for Beast. At the end of Beast though, another pair will be needed. $140. DD was very happy with them. They have been on the approved list for several years now.

My 2021 wears the Garmont T8 and loves them! Comfortable out of the box but break them in anyway! He is using his issued boots for survival swim right now. He says they are ok too but prefers the T8.

Back in the day, we just wore what they issued us. The drill was to put them on new, walk through the nearest stream and get them soaked right through, then wear them the rest of the day.

Tada, broken in.

Honestly people did not care if you had different boots than the required ones at Beast this summer I went with the Garmonts I highly recommend those

Maybe that was something your company didn’t care about or enforce, but it’s important enough to WP that they send out a letter regarding what’s authorized.
There will be much information sent to CC’s regarding what to bring to RDay. It’s been stated before that you can show up with only the clothes on your back and be “Ok”. There are however allowed things to bring that will be helpful if you can afford them, and an authorized pair of broken in boots is one of those things. There are also the disallowed items to not bring......don’t be that CC!
Attention to detail starts now for CC’s, and as Cadets you will be tested on this for 47 months.
Things such as a simple “packing list” are part of that test, and you are either a Go or No Go on how you packed. Just like forgetting your pen as part of your packing list for Air Assault school....No Go! That Cadet was dropped from the school for it.
Sorry for the rant, but WP and the Army trains their soldiers this way for a reason, and that is to accomplish the mission and to survive under extreme combat situations. Thus train and prepare accordingly!
Jack 192, attention to detail has always been a pet peeve of mine even on the seemingly irrelevant things, because it matters. I don’t want CC’s thinking it’s acceptable to not follow the boot policy, even though some Cadre may overlook it. Some things may get innocently overlooked, but always follow your (lawful) orders....even the “dumb” ones you will get.

Hopefully you take my comments as helpful and you will teach your Plebe next year what you have learned, and how to be successful.

You will be issued boots on "R" Day, but you will be required to purchase and bring your own boots to USMA for Beast Barracks.

The Garmont T8's were one of four approved boots for the Class of 2022. If that's what you wore during Beast, no one cared, because they were an authorized boot model.

The process may change for the Class of 2023, but last year the Cadet Candidates received a four page memorandum in their portal after they accepted their USMA appointment. The memo was titled, "Authorized Footwear for the Class of 2022." The memo indicated that each Cadet Candidate was required to purchase low-quarters, boots, and PT running shoes. The word MANDATORY was in all caps, bold and underlined.

The low-quarters portion indicated that regular DLATS black oxfords ($50) and Bates Durashocks ($155) were approved. Each had an Item # that could be used to locate the specific shoe. The memo also specified "non-shiny" low-quarters only. My DS said his low-quarters were the hardest to break in, even though we bought him the Bates Durashocks. There are also optional female pumps listed, but I doubt many of those were brought to Beast.

The four approved boots were:
  • Belleville C390 or FC390 in Coyote Brown ($120)
  • DLATS OCP Combat Boots in Coyote ($81)
  • Belleville Khyber 11 (TR550) Mountain Hybrid in Coyote ($130)
  • Garmont T8 (Typo in Memo Garmont TB, gotta love the Army) Bifida II in Coyote ($140)
DS bought the Garmonts, and said they were virtually broken in from the first time he wore them. They made it through Beast, and he says that they will make it through his entire Plebe year. He is extremely happy with his Garmonts and recommends them, but he has teammates who are equally happy with their Khybers.

Finally, the memo contemplated PT running shoes, but it does not require a specific brand or model. It did require that the shoe be new, low top, and lace up. DS ran in his for a week then packed them for Beast.

In April or early May you should receive a Packing List Memorandum. Last year the memo was nine pages long. The memo will provide an "R" Day packing list for Cadet Candidates including:

  • Mandatory items - boots, shoes, and required paperwork
  • Recommended items - watch, multi-tool, personal hygiene, first-aid items, extra socks and underwear
  • Prohibited items - phones and electronics, contraband, weapons
  • Partial list of items issued to CC's - Clothing, bedding, and toiletries
  • Luggage packing diagram - Bag not to exceed 45 linear inches for HxWxD, about .7 cubic feet (I saw several CC's with larger bags; I don't know if there were consequences for not following guidelines.)
DS brought virtually all of the recommended and optional items, but remember that you have to carry that around all "R" Day, and it must fit "in" your bag. DS fit everything but his boots in the bag, and his boots hung from the bag by their laces. He said that worked out well for him. Also, he took extra socks and underwear, but half way through he asked for more socks and underwear, which we promptly shipped. Take as much as you can fit in your bag; he started with nine extra of each and we sent another 1/2 dozen. Also buy 1 and 2 gallon zip lock bags to pack all loose items, plus take extras for separating wet and dry clothes. Below is a picture of almost everything that DS took with him on "R" Day. It's missing his Bible, journal, a small fan, flashlight, gloves, and multi-tool. Good luck to all current applicants and Cadet Candidates.
