Prospective Class of 2020

Do you mean at KP? I gotta tell you that you might want to rethink that. I was on some kind of team or club all year while I was there. Even that first (quarter in my day) I was on the sailing team. It was good to get away from the BS, especially early in Plebe year. . . . just sayin' . . .

So you're advising me to join a team, let's say, right off the bat to kinda clear my mind? Plus, I'm from a landlocked state, what would you suggest given I have no aquatic experience other than boating/jet skiing?

Not advising. . .suggesting. . . doesn't have to be an organized team. I used the sailing team as an example, and I only was there for the fall season my Plebe year. The rest of my time there was on the Rugby Club. Of course one has to gage the time spent on an extracurricular activity against what is needed for academics and the rest, too. Just don't dismiss it out of hand. And don't discount the waterfront just because you are not from any coast. I mean it IS the Merchant Marine Academy. . . .

Huge advocate for being a part of the water front. Tons of opportunities to get off campus, become a better mariner, and do some really cool stuff. You can't even imagine where you might be in a year or two as a result of your time spent at the KP water front. Regardless of what you end up doing yes, be a part of a club or sport, or something, sitting up the hill all day you'll go insane. Being a part of a club or team will provide mentorship opportunities and support from upperclassmen that know how to get though plebe year.

With all that's being said, again, I know nothing about how to sail and stuff like that. I'm absolutely interested in the waterfront, but what would be some of my best options do you think?

Plenty of people learn to sail on the waterfront. There is also the power squadron if you don't want to be a blow-boater.

The waterfront has its page on the USMMA website. Tons of information available there.

Most people who become involved with the waterfront plebe year have nearly zero waterfront experience. The administration does a good job of selling this as a military academy, and it shows through the crazy number of students who came because this is a service academy rather than interest in the maritime profession.

I honestly disagree with asking for an upperclassman to fill you in on how to get by the regiment without scraping an elbow as a plebe. You have to get in there and feel it out. Understand that nothing you do regimentally can have any real consequences to you as a plebe, but try your best to get things done for the purpose of chasing perfection and building a work ethic. If you're somewhat regimentally stupid, like I was, you could/will probably get destroyed on a regular basis first tri. But I feel like you'll honestly be better for it.

Does anyone know why, in the Indoctrination videos available on YouTube, all the Plebes (or whatever) have their shirts buttoned all the way up? Is that required?

Get used to it, he he he. Every button is to be secured at all times and zippers are to be zipped up as far as possible at all times, other than in academic buildings and in your room. Its especially a pain when wearing pea coats. I believe it is till recognition, or at least that is what it was in the good old days.

Remember these words ... Attention to detail! When you go to sea you have to remember to close/dog/secure doors, hatches, portholes, valves, loose lines, etc.

This is still the case. peacoats and raincoats are a real pain in the neck. Also, the training staff wants them zipped/buttoned in academic buildings too.
